That's my guess. I would need a better picture of the teeth to be sure though. I've kept multiple piranha species over the years and red bellies have a different shaped dorsal fin, but with cross breeding and natural vs aquarium things can change.

    Got it. Red bellied pacu

Caught it on Lake Barkley with a jug baited with hotdog. Was in my kayak and had this little monster next to my legs while paddling back to the dock.

    17 inches long.

Ill get some of the live pics up in a minute. Got a close up of the teeth even.

17" it's still a baby. I've helped relocated a few that were almost 3 feet long and they put up a heck of a struggle. I don't envy you having it sitting between your legs in a kayak. You do know they like to eat nuts & berries lol.

Sucks someone tossed their aquarium fish into a lake, but I bet it was pretty cool reeling it in.

It did put up a bit of a fight pulling it in. Had no clue what i had, even when i saw it in the net.

I went to pull the hook out. Saw the teeth, did a hard nope and left it in the net, hook line and all for the trip back to the dock.

It was a mess manuevering. Exciting.

I caught something like that a long time ago fishing on the coast of New Jersey. It had black across the back and those teeth. Never knew what it was but remembered those teeth.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

No. Looked like a lot like BrutalAB's did but not blue, more of a dull golden color with a black dorsal area. Was weird and looked mean with those teeth.

Could have been a black pacu. They are a bit rarer in the aquarium trade, but they do turn up from time to time. Like the commonly found red belly pacu they grow big quick so someone could have tossed their unwanted fish into a lake.
