Load Data Sources for 7-30 JDJ?

I recently traded for a 7-30 Waters Improved 14 inch Contender Barrel. Does anyone have any information on this cartridge and is it known as the 7-30 Improved? I have received an email from SSK with some data just looking for more powders to use. Just a starting place would be fine.

I really don't know what a 7-30 improved is. The 7-30 waters doesn't allow much room to be improved.

I wondered the same thing as I thought Ken Waters did the improving. I would look to Mr. Waters as a starting point.

It's possible what you have may actually be a "7 JDJ #2" which is a .307 Win necked down to 7mm and fire-formed to a (nearly) straight-wall configuration with an 'Ackley-improved' shoulder. The 7 JDJ #2 pre-dated the 7-30 Waters (which was also based on the .307 Win case) and it's possible that someone has "improved" a 7-30 Waters barrel by reaming the chamber to the SSK configuration. Years ago, I had one of the SSK originals and it was a real tack-driver but, with full-house loads, brass life was relatively short and nobody wanted to shoot from the station on either side of me due to the nasty muzzle blast from SSK's 'Arrestor' brake. I don't recall experimenting with cast in this cartridge but do remember that JD's recommended loads all used relatively slow powders such as H414 and H4350 with jacketed bullets in the 115-130 gr. range.

The 7-30 waters is based on the 30-30 case, not the .307 winchester.

My 'bad'...was quite a few years ago and I didn't check on what I thought I recalled. No excuse but, back then, the 7mms were the hot item for IHMSA Production and Unlimited Classes and there were so many variants (two versions of the 7 JDJ, 7 TCU, 7 BR, 7x47, 7-08, 7 Waters, 7 Int'l, 7R Intn'l, etc. etc.) that it was hard to keep track.

After looking at some old reloading notes and rethinking a bit, it's quite possible the 17 deg. shoulder of the 7-30 chamber has simply been recut to an 40 deg. 'Ackley Improved' configuration. A chamber cast might be the OPs best answer.

You say 7-30 JDJ in your title but 7-30 waters improved in the text. Just curious which is it?

Why don't you post what you have and we can compare it to 7-30 loads we shoot. Either that or dimensions of a fired case will help.

The Barrel is stamped 7-30 JDJ it is an SSK barrel. I was told by the previous owner that he used the 7-30 Waters Load Data and the SSK Improved Load Data. But yes I would like that load data. Anything to get me a starting point.

It is a 30-30 Case fire formed to 7-30 Waters (JDJ) with a 40 Degree Neck angle.

I realize these are loads for jacketed and you probably would like to use cast, but I will post to get you started.
These are from Lees 2nd Ed.
