The fine old lady can shoot

I was apprehensive taking the old custom Commission rifle out to shoot being the fact that the gun is such a nice rifle. But after sitting down, double checking the bore, slugging it for a second time, still coming out with .318", checking the chamber with a dummy round even though it was listed as 8mm Mauser. I ordered up some .318" that are 196 grain jacketed soft points and loaded it with 36.0 grains of IMR-4064 with puts it around 2,000 fps. With the double set triggers I got nearly a 1 inch group at 30 yards. I never had to touch the sights and the second sight blade puts the rounds two inches taller. Even with the light load, it's got a bit of a punch, the gun might only weigh 7 pounds at best.
I also got an original clip for it and it feeds perfectly fine. I'm going to try it out at 100 yards next after I load up some more rounds, but I will say one thing, this thing would be great to hunt whitetail with this fall.

Whatever cannot be remedied, must be endured.

I use to have a Chinese Mauser 88 Hanyang with the .318 bore.
It liked the heavier bullets , and did fairly well out to 200 yards.
My rifle by far didn't look as nice as your rifle.

From a whitetail hunting stand point with that load it is just a very, very, very fancy 35 Rem...should do as well as she looks in the woods.

No reason they shouldn't shoot if everything is good. My 9 X 57 Haenel/Rasch does that at 75 yards with boring regularity. I regularly shoot rifles a lot nicer than like our sporters on the Commission rifle., Dave.

That is a beautiful 88 Commission Rifle. I have a couple of the military version and they love the 8mm Karabiner bullet that drops at close to 240 grains from a Lee mold (available from Midsouth and known as the 215gr 8mm Kar). This bullet has a 0.230" meplat and is very effective.
