    Air Pellet lead

    A friend of mine gave me a 3/4 full 5 gallon bucket of lead flakes that he got at an Air Rifle Range.
    I started melting it down and have 43 lbs of ingots and I am only about halfway thru the bucket before I ran out of propane.
    I did test the ingots with muretic acid to see if they contained any Zinc.
    No reaction at all from the acid.
    It looks and feels like pure lead , so I may save this stash for my Muzzleloaders
    But I do have plenty of Tin and raw Antimony if I need to harden it up for casting other boolits

    Score!

    Most of them are dead soft. Buy him a 12 pack of beer.

    I was a little worried because I have had pellets that contained Zinc.
    But that was in California where they don't like anything that contains lead.
    But then again , that was 30 years ago.
    I don't know if it is still the same.
    But this a good score.
    But I really don't need more lead right now.
    But it is nice to have friends that are on the look out for materials that I might need in the future

    Crossman Pellet
    Pb = 98.9%
    Sb = 1.1%
    Sn = 0%

    Thank you BNE for this scan result.

    Thank you for the info on the pellets.
    If what I have is the same, then it is close enough to pure lead to shoot in my Muzzleloaders without being too hard.

    I have coached an air rifle team at two different high schools now for about eight years. Lead pellets are dead soft pure. About four years ago, we were ordered to quit using lead pellets. Tried a few kinds and settled on the ones the CMP recommends made in the Chech Republic. I sent samples of three different ones, the Daisy offering, Champions Choice ones and the ones we use now and all three are for all intents and purposes pure tin. I was saving the lead ones, now I'm saving the tin ones, I get about a coffee can full a year.

    I highly, highly doubt you'll find any air gun pellets with Zinc unless they have some kind of plastic skirt on them to obturate. I have seen some like that for sale at Wal Mart, but seem to remember them being made of aluminum.
