Herter's Universal neck sizer

Anyone have a copy of Herters Universal neck sizing die instructions? I'm having less than satisfactory results and suspect I don't have it set up correctly. Thanks, Dan

Really, a universal neck sizing die? I never knew such a thing ever existed. Does it look like a regular die? Does it use some kind of collet?

Dan, really it is a simple process , The Lee Universal Expander Die works on same principle as the Herters .. 2 interchange diameter size plugs put in the die to expand the mouth JUST enough to bell the case mouth so 1/2 of the bullet base can be seated in the the case.... with the smallest diameter plug. The press MUST be adjusted for down stroke depth so the bell is not over expanded otherwise, kiss that case goodbye

Is Dan talking about a sizing die or a belling die? They aren't the same. I have the Lee belling die and use it a lot for the obscure cartridges I shoot. I thought it was pretty much self explanatory.

OK, This is a PDF I made from a photograph of the die instructions and catalog page. Not 100% perfect, but my main computer had heart failure Sunday night during the latest Windows upgrade and is still hospitalized in intensive care. Unfortunately it has all the software for the scanners so I had to resort to Plan B.

Danth, look these over carefully, you could have any of three things happening with your die, neck sizing, full length sizing or bullet seating. The catalog page illustrates this the best. I have several neck size inserts but no seating insert and I think there is a full length insert in a box somewhere.

I have two the Herter's Universal neck sizer dies with bushings for 32 and 25 caliber. I'm always on the look out for other bushings, especially 30 caliber.

I believe Dan is referring to Lee's Universal Expanding Die ... which it is not. You're calling it a belling die, which is exactly what it is but that's not what Lee calls it.

You make a good point I don't know why manufacturers don't give more thought to what thy call products .
You can sure see the results on the forum and confusion it causes even with experienced reloaders and shooters.
Another example is the Ruger single actions with 2 frame sizes for some of the the same cartridges that will not accept the same maximum loads.

I use a Lee Universal Expanding die to expand the case mouths of my brass to introduce a flare to enable easy bullet seating (I don't ring any brass so I never "bell" any).No big deal as I sometimes use a Lyman "M" die to enlarge the case neck ID closer to bullet diameter...

The Herter's neck sizing die is one cool tool -- in the day you could get 22 A,B,C, and D with each one being slightly larger so you could fit anything from 22 Hornet to 220 Swift. And 30's in at least three diameters also as I recall. It must be 6 inches long with miles of threads so you do a lot of turning to make a caliber change. At one time I used mine a lot but gradually got dedicated dies for everything and the old Herter's hardly ever gets used. They also made full-length sizing inserts for it but failed to vent the shoulder so that didn't work out so well...

I have what I think you are talking about. I have a set of outer die shells, one is a seater die with different collets for different calibers and the other holds a sizer die in side, one for FL and the other is for neck only sizing. I have inserts for 300 Win and 270 Win. I'm not sure they are Herters as there is no marking on the dies just on the die lock rings.
