Lost my Dad March 1, 9th Division in Europe

I lost my Dad on March1, 2021, and it's been hard to deal with. He served for freedom in the 9th Division, and was wounded by a M42 nest the afternoon before St. Lo fell. He was put back into his front-line unit at the start of our offensive part of the Bulge, and fought until the surrender.

I was all but fatally injured as a child, and my Dad was my buddy and caretaker, as he had his own injuries and his PTSD to deal with, so we really relied on each other, shooting and hunting for fun and to rehabilitate my body. He got me started in competitive shooting as a Junior member, and i really took to it. It's hard to think of the sacrifices of his generation, and how those lessons are all but lost now to the younger generations. He was 96 years old at his passing, and he is certainly missed.

I share this small story, but it is but a scratch on the surface. The 9th Division octofoil under my moniker is in honor of my Dad, and I use it proudly there.

Thank you. Say a prayer for him in thanks for his life.

    Bob

I feel you - lost my dad 10 years ago at 86, wish I had the extra 10 you got. He was 10th Mountain and took Riva Ridge...

Sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He would have been born about the same year as my dad (1925), they were on the younger end of WW2 veterans. Dad went over with the 94th Infantry Division and found himself in some of the worst fighting of the war in the ETO, all because my grandfather refused to sign for him to become an apprentice on the railroad, because it was "too dangerous!" My dad died in 1999, PTSD and a problem with alcohol, not always the easiest guy to get along with, but what can I say, he was Dad, and I know I can't imagine the things he went through at such a young age.

Octofoil-so that's what it is called. Lost my Dad several years ago. He volunteered for the draft, leaving a job at Bell Aircraft in Buffalo to join the Army Air Corps. Trained as an aircraft mechanic but never went overseas. Stationed in Nashville, TN he met my mother. Please know that I am sorry for your loss. Cherish the good memories.

I am sorry for your loss. He seemed like a great guy and Father. You have a lot of good memories, cherish them. You are one of the luckier ones. Prayers sent.

I am very sorry for your terrible loss. I lost my Dad in2010 and he too suffered from ptsd. He was a ww2 vet and fought in North Africa and Italy in the battle for the monestary at Monte Casino. I was very proud of him. I pray your Father rests in peace. The pain from the loss gets a little better but it takes years.

I am so sorry for your loss. You two will be together again. May the Good Lord comfort you in the mean time as you go about the chore of continuing this life without your father

So sorry for the loss of your father. Sadly, the greatest generation numbers are slowly dwindling.

Sorry for you loss. Lost my dad in 2019 at 76 rather unexpectedly. Miss him every day. I wish I could tell you it goes away but it does get easier.
