    Western 30-40

You know it's funny. I remember when my dad gave me his Krag and a bunch of old (even then) boxes of ammo.
I shot most of them (kept the brass of course) but that old rifle just kicked too hard for that thirteen year old. Put it up for later. That was 1978.
Pulled her back out today. Still kicks like a mule.with that steel buttplate. Got to looking at the ammo and did a search.

August 1945 if I'm reading it right. Kept three shots in an inch at 50 yds with peep sight. Not bad for a couple of oldfarts.Click image for larger version.

Had you shot it between 1978 and today? That's neat, thanks for sharing.

I doubt if that ammo in that box shown in the photo dates clear back to 1945. True, that's not the W-W ammo box of today, but I remember it being new in the '60s and '70s.

I had not shot it since (safe queen much?)

It is before 1962 as it has no warnings for children etc. For that date code that puts in 1945.

O.K.--quite possible, I guess. I have a box just like it purchased in the middle '60s. It would involve a major search mission to find it and check the code. Where did you find a list of the codes?

The owner of the LGS in NC had a wooden military box of .30/40 Krag military ammo sitting under a bench in the back. Mostly split necks. We grabbed a bag full, pulled the bullets and shot them in the 06. Talk about recoil...…/beagle
