    improved cartridge

how do you use a reamer to improve a chamber?
What I mean is do you need to run the reamer with a floating reamer holder on a lathe
or could you improve a chamber by a hand reamer?
    Curious

I can be done by hand but the issue is headspace should be shortened for a true improved chamber. When you close the bolt on a unimproved rimless or belted case there should be a slight resistance of .004". Unless it's a Savage that normally requires a lathe to take on turn off the barrel.

Jumping off into chamber reaming is fairly major surgery.

If it isn't defective, you're not making a change to another caliber, or doing something like making a 'Ackley Improved'.
I don't see what there is to improve on.

It reminds me of a life long friend who was a GM dealership mechanic in our younger years.
I was working on my car one time, got stumped on something in the guts of a power steering pump, and called him.

He told me, "If you need to ask that question,,,, you really shouldn't be working on it".

I have done a lot of machine work, was a machinist for over 10 years in a previous life
and that is why I asked because it can be done both ways either by machine or by hand
I did forget however that you would need to take a turn off the barrel
    thanks for the answer

One other situation that can happen is the improved reamer may have a significantly larger front shoulder diameter and the pilot may not reach the bore to stabilize it. Hand reaming in that situation would be much more difficult.

I have reamed a .22 Hornet to the "K" version by hand, twice. And lengthened a .357 Magnum to .357 Max. The Hornets were both a tack drivers afterward. The Max not so much.

Don't think I'd try hand reaming any of the bigger bottleneck cases.

Throating OTOH I've always done by hand, using a guide bushing at the rear of the chamber.

most of my AI work has been done when chambering short chambered barrels. the only rechambering an existing barrel I took a 22-250 to 22-250AI bur the barrel was took off and set back the length of one thread .
the tolerance in doing this work are so tight that when doing a 25-06 AI for example the head space go gauge for the standard 25-06 is now the NO GO for the 25-06AI that is giving you a tolerance of less than .003 inch. ( that is half the thickness of a dollar bill)
like other have said this work or head spacing any barrel needs to be done on a lathe by some one that has a full understanding of how it works.
