1893 Spanish Mauser in 219 Zipper? Followup

Well, I bought it, got it for 200. Broke it down hoping to see some markings on the barrel, nope, not a one. Shame that is has been bubba'ed as it seems to have been a pretty nice one. I haven't mentioned the stock before now.. well, because it was just too much to take in! The stock has some type of plastic wrap material completely covering it. Sadly, on the right side of the buttstock you can see original arsenal impressions still on the stock! I do not know if I should even consider trying to remove it, or what I may find if I do, I'll try to learn more about it.
I'll attach some pictures, first the stock, if you are brave!

The bolt face DOES accept a .30-30 case head and a .30-30 case drops nearly all the way into the chamber. I have some cerrosafe around here somewhere if I can find it, obviously a chamber cast is in order.

OMG! that stock makes my eye's hurt. Don't try to resurrect that stock - just buy a new one. I'm not saying this because I don't think you can salvage what has to be the ugliest Mauser stock that I have ever seen. I'm saying this because that stock as it is will give you a once in a lifetime opportunity that you may not want to pass up. Go to some yard sales or ebay and find the most hideous lamp shade that you can find. Now scrounge around on amazon or at a local hardware store for the components to make a lamp. You now have the materials to make the worlds ugliest lamp. Yes, this stock has the prospects of becoming a lamp post on the ugliest lamp in the universe. You can then sell it on fleabay for many times more than you paid for the rifle, and some fool will gladly buy it.

Is that an after market trigger? Looks like the bolt handle has been worked, is it drilled and tapped for a scope.

Worst thing about that stock is that it's not going to be conducive to shooting with a scope. Figure out what it's chambered for, .219 Zipper, .219 Improved, .219 Donaldson Wasp, any would be fun once you get dies and brass sorted out. Kinda wonder if someone chambered it for .22 Savage High Power.

Looks like a stock trigger to me.

Wow, words fail me about that stock.

It is D&T'ed even for a front sight . One hole in the rear bridge, two over the chamber and two on the barrel. I have some bases here for a small ring, maybe I'll get lucky and they will fit. As for that stock being conducive to firing with a scope, heck there is no way I could show up at a range
where anyone could see this thing!

My apologies to stock car fans, but that stock screams NASCAR to me! With the gas vent on the side of the action, it should say Oviedo on top- 1916 update of the 1893 Mauser. If a 30-30 almost chambers in it, I don't see how it can be a 219 Zipper; is the bore .22 caliber? The follower modification is interesting. I see potential, Endeavor to persevere!

Oh yeah, I know where a set of .225 Winchester dies are if it looks like they will be of use for it.....

IF a 30-30 case drops in, it can't be 219 Zipper.

OK, all kidding on the terrible stock aside, the rest of the rifle has some real potential. The 219 Zipper is a good cartridge in a bolt action. Both the 219 Donaldson Wasp and the Zipper improved would be a good choice in a 93 Mauser, but the 225 Winchester has too much pressure. I've always felt that using 225 reloading dies to make up an "improved Zipper" that still had the 30-30 rimmed case head, would be a good idea because you could use a 225 Winchester reamer to chamber it, and it would be a handloading proposition, so the pressures could be kept low enough for a small ring action. The only fly in that ointment is that a 225 W cartridge would chamber in that barrel.
So, if a chamber cast shows that this is really a 219 Zipper, here's some suggestions; First, get a Boyd's small ring stock for it. Second, Timney discontinued the sportsman trigger for Mausers, but they still make the featherweight trigger. The featherweight is a better trigger for a varminter, and I would recommend one. Put a good scope on it. I like swfa scopes because they're good quality at a good price.
A couple of years ago I built up a 93 Mauser in 223 Remington. Some people will tell you that small ring Mauser's are not a good choice for varminters because of the long dwell time on the firing pin, and that they aren't accurate enough. My small ring must not have gotten the memo because it can shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards. With a good trigger, scope and stock your Mauser could be a top notch varmint rifle.Attachment 278825

I would first do a chamber cast.

Dan you got a heck of a deal, the stock is worth the 200! What the heck is that, plastic heat shrink or dip covering, definately different. Get a chamber cast and find out what you got, good luck!

I'm interested in seeing how they modified the bolt face to accept the 30-30 case. Please load up a picture of the bolt face and extractor.

    Thanks

Texas by God explained how he modified the bolt face on a small ring Mauser to 30-30 by using a 1/2" rotary broach. This works! I tried opening the bolt face on a 98 Mauser for a 30-30 with a 1/2" carbide end mill and all it did was dull the mill. Then I tried using a carbide rotary broach in the milling machine and it got the job done. Thanks Texas!

You are welcome, 405 grain. I really like your rifle. I bet that the .223 modifications weren't a picnic....The glacial lock time hasn't hurt my 93's accuracy either!
Looking at the modified follower above; I'm thinking that the hump on the front may be to help elevate the extreme taper of the .219 Zipper or .22 Hi Power- whichever it is?
    Keep us updated, please.
