    Imr 4198

Bought three pounds of it today, mainly because it did well with the 311284 in my Krag last I tried it. Looking in an old Speer manual, looks like it should be good with heavy bullets in the 8mm-06 and likely others. How does everybody feel about this stuff for use in cast rifle loads?

I use Hodgdon's recipe now, but outside of the typical .223 or .45-70 loads, it's fantastic for most things cast. I've used it in 30-06, 8mm, 7.5 French, and .303 with success. My groups with 2400 were generally better, but my load development wasn't super extensive, so when I can't get one, I use the other.

I had 1/2 a can from way back and wanted to use it up just to empty it I loaded for a 30-30 with a 164 grain LEE bullet and turned out to be one of my best loads for that cartridge .

I used a bunch of it in .222 and .223 bolt actions in the 1970's. Great accuracy. Ive used it for cast in .450 Marlin, 30-30, 8mm Mauser, and 38-55 with good results there too. It's great for reduced loads in lots of bigger cartridges too.

I have used in 45/70 for heavies. Its been a Good Hornet and Bee powder too. But today for me its a 30/30 cast bullet powder. 21-23g produces nearly one hole 50Y groups with a few 170 ish g bullets! I just loaded 50 the other day with the Arsenal 311/170 rf bullet powder coated.

I 4198 is probably the most used rifle powder I have for lead boolits. I use it in my 50-70’s, 45-70’s , smokeless muzzleloader, 38-55’s, and many others on down to 256 Win Mag.
    It’s a great powder.

I don't use IMR4198 anymore and I'm not sure why as I think about it, but for one powder that will cover many rifle cast bullet uses, it's hard to beat. I can't recall ever trying the Hodgdon version, but I'm pretty sure the same can be said for it.

I too use it for 45/70, 38/55, .35 Remington, 9.3X62 and others. If I could only have one powder, not sure this is the one, but it would be on the short list!

for some reason that i don't know, hodgdon 4198 is the 30-40 krag powder of choice. the imr 4198(the same powder?) is also good too.

I dont beleive they are the same powder. Some do how ever. I would not use the same load without first tuning.

Wow, you found powder. I sure would love to find some H4198. There are slight differences between IMR & H 4198.

Powders I can find. Still a lot of jacketed bullets too, several smaller shops around that have some on hand. Primers are a no go.

4198 might be a bit slow for 50 beowulf, Lyman book calls for 1680, h110 and 4227. but I'm pretty much a stickler to using safe published load data. I leave the real experimenting to the ballistics experts.

imr4198 and h4198 are different powders, load data is not the same, you can squeeze out a bit more velocity with h4198.
not to confuse the issue but h and imr 4227, is the same and w296 and h110 is the same and h414 and w760 are the same and there are a few others
