English starlings are a real pest, flock will clean out bird feeder(s) in a few minutes, build sloppy nests and mess all over everything. My Dad paid me $0.10 per back on the farm when I was about 10.

Had a woodpecker making holes in my cabin. The siding was custom ordered 10" wide white pine board and batten from a local sawmill - not easily replaced. Not sure if it was showing off for the local females or actually thought there was food in the cracks but over time it had made holes at all four corners and a couple other spots. I was up there for a bowhunt and heard it pecking. Got out the Gamo Hunter 440 and got a couple shots at it before it took off but the rifle is only sighted for minute of beer can at about 20yds for casual plinking. Later I was in the bedroom getting dressed for an afternoon hunt and the darned thing started pecking on the otherside of that wall. This time I grabbed the 20 ga. Felt bad and know they are protected but so is my cabin! Haven't seen any evidence of pecking since.

Our squirrels take the acorns and stuff them into the Cable TV boxes on the wires until full then it rains and the box doesn't drain and we get no TV.

We don't have grackles but we have about every other kind of bird and all of them stuff their little beaks with the seeds my wife puts out everyday. WE have a Covey of Quail with 50+ birds that comes thru every day and pretty much sweeps up most of it. We have several big fat Doves that fly in and scare off all the little birds. We have 5 woodpeckers that are embroiled in constant turf wars with 2 Blue Jays, and that fight is unfolding right now as I write this.

None of these birds are targets for me, as my only target birds are Mocking Birds which I have been at war with since grade school. However those two Blue Jays pretty much keep all the MB's out of the area so I don't hunt in my yard. If I did my wife would kick me out of the house.

Kind of bums me out since a couple of those fat Quail would cook up nice for dinner and considering how many we have, they wouldn't be missed.

I'm going to be shooting paper targets in my shop this afternoon.

Like I said I refuse to live my life under the scrutiny of the Audubon Society which is responsible for 95+% of these stupid laws. IN case you didn't know the AS is comprised mostly of Activist Women who are well enough off that they don't have to work and spend their days sitting in legislators offices pressuring them to vote for the AS's wildlife protection agenda. They threaten Primaries for those who don't toe the line.

These people are a major problem for Our Way of Life and the only way to deal with them is to "out activist" them. Unfortunately since I have to work,,, I can't participate.

Who's gonna come to your house and arrest you for shooting one stupid pest bird? Are you actually afraid of this?

If one of my neighbors ratted me out I'd be having serious words with them! But I'd ask the Enforcement person to show me the carcass before we went any further. And since there would be no carcass since I "missed the shot",,, it would all end right there,,,

Except for the words with said neighbor!!!.

That said I don't think video taping your actions works out well. Seen too many Gang Bangers go to jail after doing this.

I have purple martins and Starlings, The hawks fix most of the problem. And have the giant red head woodpeckers. No poking holes in head.

And they have forgotten that Audubon was a hunter and almost all his specimens were 'collected' in the appropriate manner.

I don't know about grackles but crows are covered by a treaty with Mexico, BUT there is a provision for eliminating crows if they are presenting a threat to wildlife, livestock, domestic animals, crops and a few other sundry items. I observe that provision of the treaty religiously.

Never heard that about bluejays but can readily see how they, being coloured small crows, can be predatory. Crows are terrible predators of nestlings.

Some law and law related information for the consumption of those who post and read.

    1. Article VI, Paragraph 2 of the U.S. Constitution is commonly referred to as the Supremacy Clause. It establishes that the federal constitution, and federal law generally, take precedence over state laws, and even state constitutions.

    2. Who enforces Federal laws about migratory birds and the killing thereof. There are Federal Game Wardens and most state game wardens are authorize to enforce these Federal Laws. Who is it that checks your state hunting license for a Federal Duck Stamp?

    3. Every scofflaw thinks they are above the law. They puff out their chests and make bold talk, until the cuffs go on.

Charles: Nobody is going to jail for shooting a pest, and damn sure not gonna happen in South Texas!

Especially when they currently have bigger problems with Illegals than pests!

What about shooting Pigs, aren't they protected?? They are overrunning your state and are "Migratory" in nature as they are "migrating" all over the country. We even have them in CA now. They first got loose in NC and made it 3000 miles to CA!

Pests are Nuisances,,, WE deal with them as needed and the fact that insanity has crept into our society and our laws doesn't mean we have to follow every law to the letter. Police have Prosecutorial Discretion and we see it everyday on our highways which in CA are currently running at 80+ MPH on roads with 65MPH Speed Limits. Nobody is getting speeding tickets!

And nobody is going to jail for shooting a stupid Bird or a Rat. If it happens we have sunk to the lowest point in our history and I won't want to live here any more. Don't know where I'd go for Freedom, as this is still the Freest Place on Earth, but certain factions are trying to ruin it everyday. Look who's the President. The most corrupt person to ever hold the office!!! He killed one of my Brothers after he put him in jail for 9 years for suing him and his AG Dead Son over a corrupt Limousine Contract they put out at Dover AFB,,, this happened one week before he announced his run for President!. My bro was a Loose End! And it would have come out!.

Feral hogs are not protected by either Federal or Texas State law. There are no season or bag limits in Texas. They can even be hunted at night. Pest is not a legal term anywhere I know of so it is has no meaning. Yes people are fined and strongly so for shooting protects birds. Despite folks opinions to the contrary, it happens.

Again, I don't care what people shoot or don't shoot. I am not the police in this matter. However, I do feel the need to state the law where nonsense has taken it's place. Ignorance is neither bliss not a legal defense for breaking the law. Folks can do what they wish with the information.

When the gather or migrate-- whatever they do at a certain time of the year, its a mess.
They'll all roost in a tree and what ever is under it gets about a half inch of solid white on it.

In downtown Dallas, the city guys will come out with those shot gun bird bombs to run them
away from the tall buildings. Otherwise all the parked cars and sidewalks will become white.

We have a hawk that gets one of our prized chickens every now and then but I live with it.
Sadly, the songbirds have been in decline in the U.S. for years. They are the key to healthy forests and grasslands. My neighbors know if I catch them shooting them I will personally swear out the warrant at the Magistrate's office :^)
HOLLYWOOD Collector Left hawg 405#, right one 315#, had my elderly neighbors granddaughter treed and why I got the call. Both charged, one from 20' and one from 40'. Thanks to the good Lord and Samuel Colt I won. May God bless our Lawmen & Soldiers!

We have grackles out the wazoo and also egrets. It is against federal law to disturb the egrets with noise since the feds say they are nesting. The ones that make up those laws need to come camp out under the trees for a night or two.
Why would anyone want to protect grackles anyway?

As a lad I must have dispatched a thousand grackels with a Crosman 1377. Made me into a natural pistol shot. The neighbors did not mind either. Nobody enjoyed their noise. I was quite surprised to hear they are protected.

I have also killed many of them. I have watched them take droppings from their nest and drop them in the clean water I put in our bird bath daily.
They kill and harass a lot of other birds babies and yesterday I watched a pair of them chase a hen turkey around my yard . They also fold up and fall nicely from the sky like a missle when they get hit with a pattern of lead shot.

The cat was in the backyard yesterday and drew in some starlings. Busted a couple before they wised up.

Just do the 3 S's. Shoot, Shovel, and Shut up.
There is no difference between communism and socialism, except in the means of achieving the same ultimate end: communism proposes to enslave men by force, socialism—by vote. It is merely the difference between murder and suicide. Ayn Rand
