    Desires of the heart

"Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."

this could be read as --God places (his) desires in our heart.

When abiding in him, we want to follow his lead, his wishes, and care for others. We get new desires?

I think you make a very good point here. When you become a believer and a follower of Christ the things that you want change. But, it is also true that he blesses his followers with what they desire. Like any good father, he doesn't grant every wish if he sees or knows it to be wrong for us.

Those who are indeed "born again" of the Spirit will indeed have life changes, their values and methods will be changed. Not all at once perfect of course, but changed for the better and that change will continue for the rest of their lives.

People who are "mouth only" religionists often claim to be "Christians" but most will shy away from saying they are "born again" for fear of being seen as religious fanatics. BUT, folk who don't show any good changes in how they live and how they treat others are kidding themselves.

So, YES, real Christians will have new desires and goals. (2 Cor 5:17)
