    Conibear 110 box mod.

I bought some Conibear 110 Body Traps to trap for Ground Squirrels.
This is my first time doing this. I am not a trapper per se, just mice and Ground Squirrels.
After reading some articles on the 110, I decided to mod them with a pan type trigger.
I also made some boxes to house them.

After doing all of that, I baited and set my trap next to a hole and anxiously waited for the next day to check it.

Next day when I went and checked.......ugh-h, oh no, there was a dead racoon that got into my trap.
The racoon was able to get it's head in the box and the trap got it across the top of it's head.

I felt bad about that. Such an unnecessary kill. (frown)

I thought about this for a bit and came up with a "door" idea with a smaller opening that should prevent that from happening again.

Here are some pictures of what I did.

I used some cloth strapping for the handle and hinges and used a piece of wire on the side to keep the "door" held closed. The back of the trap has 1/2" metal screen stapled to the box.

I put the modded trap out today.
    Hopefully I will have success.

Looks good to me. Coons are nearly as bad as mice. If you are ever unfortunate enough to have one chew its way into your attic, you’ll know what I mean.

I would worry that the raccoon would tear up the box trying to get to the bait. Let us know how it works.

So, have you tried your new set up? I’m a trapper from way back when and am interested in how your set up works. I had a few Conibears, but only used them for beaver under the ice. I used leg traps, that I think are outlawed in a lot of places these days. Let us know how your set works.

Take the 110 out of the box and replace it with a rat trap.

Bait the pan and you'll get the little critters.

The modded box trap has been out for several days.
    Nothing....yet.

It has been frosty in the mornings and also rain.
I think those critters are deep in their hole hibernating, or whatever they do this time of year.
Maybe a warmer day or two will happen.

I am going to leave the trap out by the hole for now.
    Maybe I'll get lucky.

    I did build three boxes.
I'll give your suggestion a try.
    Thanks.

    Success!

Despite the cold weather, I found an active ground squirrel hole to set my trap at.

I covered several holes and found one that had been re-dug out so that is the one I picked.

I checked it in the morning and it was empty. Several hours later in the afternoon it had been tripped and I had a ground squirrel in it. I saw some movement and found that it was still alive. (frown)

I pulled the squirrel out of the trap and had a good size male. I went to get my 22 revolver and saw that it was trying to crawl away. It was very slow but determined.

One shot between the shoulders put it out of it's misery.

I'm wondering now if I should go back to the original wire trigger rather than the pan trigger.
Maybe then the trap would have got him higher up in the body.

Next spring I am going to try the wire trigger and maybe try a rat trap inside another box too see how that works.

The smaller opening with the door mod worked well.
I had a game camera monitoring another trap with the door mod and caught a cat trying to nose around the opening.
I suspect that without the door mod I would have got that cat.

    Anyway, that's it for now.

    Happy New Year!

Well, I woke up this morning thinking about conibear pan triggers of all things.

I realized that I had mounted the pan trigger wrong.
I had mounted the pan such that it was in the middle of the trap instead of having it sticking out of the front of the trap.
With it sticking out in front, when triggered, it would land higher up the body of the squirrel.

I am going to remount them that way now.

    Live and learn!

I used to make boxes similar to yours for 220 coon traps. I can't tell from your picture, but if the spring is up against the back of the slot, it will propel the trap forward, and maybe catch the gopher too far back? I watched some Canadian trapping videos where they used boxes similar to yours to catch martens

put the original trigger back on it.
take a chunk of apple and impale it on the old trigger.
the vermin will have to tug on the apple to eat it and that will trigger it.
peanut butter smeared on the apple will bring them in from far around.

also, use a fine file or sandpaper on a rod/dowel and give the trap a trigger job.
make sure the "ear" has a sharp corner, not a rounded corner.

With the 110 you do what edp2k stated to make it fire better. also you can use the same trap to get muskrat and mink and if you put a pan on it just bend the trigger wires and take a 1/4" mesh wire and cut to fit and slid on the wires of the trap and you have your pan . It works when dry land trap mink. Also like stated that the trap works on marten , also if it is a 120 that is a 110 with 2 springs and you set the wires on the trigger apart it can be use in a box and catch coon with it when bait and also in trails and other animals .

    Thanks for the tip.
    I will avoid doing that.

I saw a picture where a guy used a piece of corn on the cob to do that very thing.

"trigger job" on the trap.....(smile) I"ll check my traps out.

    Thanks for the tips.
