Looks like a chamber adapter...to shoot.22s out of something close in caliber?

Some kind of sub caliber insert?????
Try sticking a .22lr in it.
why do people take a photo of an object they want identified and use a backdrop that makes it hard to even see the object. try using a white paper as a backdrop.
if you are ever being chased by a taxidermist, don't play dead
Something in the picture for scale?
If it were for a .22 LR, wouldn't it need to be offset somehow for the rimfire?
Without a size, hard to say, but possibly an adapter to shoot .32 pistol rounds in .30-30?
machined out to take a shotgun primer for low velocity and noise
Hard to imagine a cartridge insert, to shoot sub-caliber (through a rifle), that will not allow the projectile to take advantage of the rifling (for stability), and might subject the projectile to side-to-side wobbling down the barrel - as an empty ash can down a breezy NYC alleyway (resulting in unstable flight and keyholing). Cartridge conversion should include a barrel as well.
If it was easy, anybody could do it.
I have one. Its made of steel and used to fire 22 LR out of the 222 contender barrel. Primer offset is not a problem since you can flip the firing pin from centerfire to rimfire.

Chamber inserts have been made for all kinds of calibers. I recently got one,, unmarked,, that allows a .410 shell (2-3/4") to fit in a 12 Ga.
I too go with a chamber insert.
Hard to tell without measurements and a scale but it looks a lot like the slide in converter insert I have that converts a 30-30 to 32 S & W Long- possibly a converter for another caliber rifle
Without something to gauge the size, it's hard to tell but it looks like either a sub caliber chamber insert or a case that has been converted to use shotgun primers. 222rem with a shotgun primer and a pellet or possibly a nail set charge and a cast boolit. Really hard to say without some dimensions. Is it brass or steel?
looks like cartridge adaptor Perhaps 32 acp or 32smith to fit 06 or 308 pistol rounds for foraging with heavy rifle. demensions would be good I have a couple to fit 06 they work ok to about 30 yards
It's in bad shape, whatever it is.

These were adapters used in M3,M4 and M5 versions of the Williams .22 training conversions for .30 belt fed machineguns.
More info on the conversions and these adapters can be found about half-way down this page: http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/Williams4.html
