If there is rust in pits, it must be converted (electrolysis) or killed (phosphoric acid), or chelated (Evaporust) or it will continue to work. Mechanical methods (steel wool, abrasives) will not do this.

    Rust never sleeps.

Evaporust works great. Muratic acid takes rust off quickly, too, but left in for more than a few minutes, barrel will be junk. After muratic acid, rinse with water then oil thoroughly or you will end up with a bigger problem. Evaporust would be my number 1 choice. Just keep in mind that wherever there is rust, there will be a pit (or many) underneath. Another word of caution about muratic acid is that it removes bluing as fast as you can wipe it on and wipe it off. It makes for stripping bluing quick and easy.

Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians.

Well I used country gents idea of using the brass case and some flitz. It worked great. Looks like I did have 2 pits also, they are all that shows on my fired brass now. Compared to an original pre polish case and they were there also, just didn't notice due to all the other damage. But brass extracts easily so I think I'll just leave well enough alone now. Gun seems to shoot great, haven't shot at paper from a bench yet, but it hasn't missed just plinking steel. Thanks to all for the suggestions, and especially country gent.
