I once took out the digital display on one of the old green Chronys with the .060 over-powder wad from a BP 45-70.

Gas check thru the display---Guilty!!!! A second chrony which I had trouble with all the time, took a 50cal cast boolit thru it. I was kind of happy as I had a good reason to get a chrony that worked! Bad thing on the second one, is that there was a witness to what I did!!!

Some 6-8 years ago I helped a new guy get into shooting and reloading. He was an inexperienced gunner but an eager and bright young man so he did learn fairly well.

He bought a Chrony and used it a few months before putting a .300 WSM round through it, end to end; he finally understood why I wouldn't loan him my PACT Pro. (Last I heard of him he had quit reloading but not hunting, seems he was having trouble finding factory ammo - guess he finally knows why I suggested he get a .300 WinMag if that level of performance was what he wanted to hunt southern whitetail deer.)

Absolutely! One of the guys at our local club insists he needs a 300 Weatherby to hunt Pennsylvania whitetails. Insists. Of course, his idea of hunting is to sit on a hilltop on the edge of a power line clear cut and wait for the deer to cross. "Might have to shoot 500 yards!" he says. Right. Not what I call hunting.

i had a friend(RIP) here in PA and he shot a 338 RUM for deer. my gunsmith is building a rifle (for some guy) in the 30 nosler for hunting deer. its a terminus apollo action and i can't remember who made the barrel but it is a 30" barrel with muzzle brake that is 1 1/2" dia.

without a scope and stock, its gotta weigh 15lbs. i do not want to carry it, let alone shoot it. i'll stay with the 30-40 krag with 165gr ranch dogs(1924fps), thank you.

No matter the ability of any rig and glass, the bullet will fall and drift so the shooter is the weak link; he has to shoot correctly.

Magazine stories aside, there are few shooters who can hit anything in the field passed maybe 200 yards except in their day dreams.

I prefer my .30-06 for long range shooting but my .243 will kill whitetail deer just as dead, just as far out, and just as quickly, as anyone else's .340 Weatherby. Or a .458 Win Mag.

    ^^^^ amen ^^^^^

I blame Elmer Keith for starting the fad of boasting in print about 500 yard shots on game. Many of which he may never have actually made, if an old man I met in Idaho a few years back is any guide.

Yes, a gas check will do it!

I found a replacement screen on ebay for £20 and got my Chroney up and running again.

Just for information, I tested some cast loads for my Mod 1889 Schmidt-Rubin through my Chroney F1 and also through my club's Lab Radar and the average velocity reading between the 2 was 5fps, not too shabby a result!

I stacked 2 clear welding helmet lenses in front of my old F1 Crony. display. Stops gas checks and ML wads. Can you use rods and a plastic diffuser to replace the old cardboard screens on the old F1?
The 3 people a man must be able to trust completely are his gunsmith his doctor & his preacher ..,his gunsmith for his short term health ,his doctor for long term health ,and his preacher incase one of the others mess up.
