Looking for any info i can get on pping smokeless 40-65.

I patch my black and blackhorn to groove dia but never used true smokeless.

    What powders work best ?
I dont crimp my loads just cam them into the rifling. Do i need to change that,?

The usual deal is boolit .001" or so over bore diameter, patch to be a snug fit in the throat, light or zero neck tension, case full of slow powder to set the overall length, jam into the lands as much as your rifle design allows. Fairly soft lead, but not critical if you can dent it with a fingernail it'll work. Roll the patch over the ogive so it won't strip off when you chamber it. And light lubrication on the patch.

OK , Thanks. That is pretty much what I'm doing with the BP.
so now the big question. what powders are being used? I've searched hundred of threads, and they talk about anything but powders.

Semtav - need the bullet weight ...Anyway, read this thread from Lyman Handbook ... http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...data-for-40-65

PS: Maybe it's time to buy the Lyman 3rd and 4th Editions of the Handbooks

I generally get the best results with the slowest powder I can manage. I shoot a lot of WC860, and it should work in this case also. You would have to duplex it to get it to work right. For non duplex loads something in the range of Winchester 760 or 780 should work, but only in strong actions. Still not going to produce very high pressure but it should be a modern made rifle.

The reason i havent considered the lyman book loads is because i need something that fills the case. Probably gonna have to stick with BH209.

I've been using WC872 and a 4gr kicker of RL-7 for years in my 45-70 Trapdoor. Pressures and velocity are in the black powder range and my chronographed SD's are in the single digits. FWIW

Finally got around to testing a couple loads inmade up quite a while ago.
4227 and 3031. Shot them back to back with no wiping, warm afternoon.
Both shot accurately with no chambering problems.
    Only had swiss 1.5 available.

What about adding a wad to the straight wall cartridge? I’m about to try some 872 in my 50-90.

I suspect you will find 872 less than inspiring in your 50-90. Wads or not.

Sorry for the drift. This seemed to have some of the info I was looking for. I tried a single round today with a case full to the base of Wcc872 and a PP 600 grain bullet. It definitely had more recoil than my 100 grain charge of 1f but it was right on at 200 yards using the same sight setting.

    SeaTac, sorry for the drift
