The Leupold 2.5x20 is about the smallest, lightest 1" scope out there, very very tough. I have a couple on my 45-70 and 444 for steep timber. A 1-4 or 1.5-5 would be my next picks, all 1" scopes, short, light and plenty for 357 ranges (under 250 yards on deer-size game - yeah that's long for a 357). There are some used 2.5x20's around, most of the fixed power 2.5's hold up to 357 recoil. I've had good luck with Simmons and have a alloy Weaver 2.5 that works well. I do have a Burris Fullfield 4.5-14 that I use for accuracy testing during load development, but then the light scope goes on if I going to carry or hunt with the rifle.

I'll second the 2.5 Leupold suggestion. I have one on my 1894 carbine in 44 mag and it is all that gun needs. The only thing that would improve it is if it had the capacity for straight 1x power as well. I've been tempted to pull it off and drop it on my 45/70 but it is such a neat trim combo I can't do it, and I'll have to wait for another to come my way.

Go back to your first ideas, glass isn't the answer to everything.

I have old eyes and there's no doubt I'd put a peep on a handgun rifle if I had one. And I'd immediately remove any small hole screw-in target aperture disc and use the whole ring to see through. Loses virtually nothing in good vision and aiming at .357 range and, as a "ghost ring" sight it would allow you to keep both eyes open for fast target pick-up and excellent snap shooting accuracy.

Any scope magnification at short range shooting is meaningless and will be a tad slower to aim and fire than a big hole peep.

The Achilles heel of the peep sight is the front sight. If you are unable to see the front sight, they are useless. This is the case with low light, in many hunting situations. I even went so far as putting a fiber optic front sight on my Marlin 1894. Red, green or white, it doesn't matter............can't make it out. That's why I go with a red dot, reflex or a conventional scope with a lighted recticle. I feel I owe it to the animal to make a clean kill.

Any decent red-dot should do nicely. I've got a Barska reflex on .44 Mag lever action and an old Tasco 30mm on a 9mm carbine; both are adequate (for me) out to 100 yds.

This is kind of like what you have. It's my Ruger PCC .40.

Note Red Dot Sight. I personally think that any 100 yard gun should either have a Red Dot Sight or Iron Sights.

These sighting systems change the handling characteristics of the gun the least of anything out there/

I use a 10mm carbine for my hog gun. Shoot out to 100 yards in brushy areas. I have a SIG Romeo 5 red dot on it. What i like is that I also use a night vision monocular behind it. Quick target acquisition, especially on runners.

    Ditto.

I'm performance oriented and don't understand the point of buying and carrying man size rifles to shoot puny handgun cartridges; lever rifles and the .30-30 cartridge were made for each other! And, other than a rig for sub-teen children or physically handicapped hunters, I'd never willingly put a scope of any kind on a short range handgun chambered rifle. Well, okay, I MIGHT mount a compact 2X on a low recoil rig for them.

Whenever I hear (or read) that they ask for an optics recommendation, I answer the same thing.
It is not asking for a recommendation for this or that weapon, it is a recommendation for the type of situation in which you are going to use the weapon.
If it is to make precision shooting, optics with high magnifications, and a fine reticule.
If it is for hunting, 4x or red dot, they are the most suitable.

I just looked closer at the pics of that Timberwolf. I thought it was supposed to be a .357?

Made by IMI in Israel for Springfield Armory, but it's a .44 Mag? I didn't know they did that?

First thing I'd do,,, is put a decent recoil pad on it! My Marlin 1894CB 24" .44 has one, and when shooting higher performance loads it damn sure needs it, and it is definitely heavier than that little pump gun.

Next, the Red Dot would be perfect on this gun and especially if you were using it for running game.

If you haven't watched "Wild Boar Fever" on the Outdoor Channel you would see why this gun needs to be so equipped.

Roger that! My el-cheapo High Point 995 9mm carbine has ghost rings on it and I love them. They are very quick and easy pointing. When I first got it I went ahead and ordered a TRS25 red dot. Decided to use it on another gun.

The Ruger M77/357 I bought used had an old Weaver K3 with beautiful glass and the old fashion post reticle. Absolutely love the combo which is perfect for short range activities.

For the dueling tree, a red dot would be nice. The C-MORE Railway lives on the slide of many a competition auto pistol. It would certainly hold up on your rifle. I much prefer the field of view on an open reflex sight to a tube type.
