Well you can tell them , but they have to make their own decisions and live their own lives , Son was in the navy,as a corpsman , i advised staying in doing the 20 letting navy pay for advanced training , but it is their decision and choices , as you said we did not pay attention to our fathers advice.

Both , was stationed up north Navy , then down in California and Okinawa with Marines .

my dad told me when i joined the army i should have stayed in for 20 years. but i didn't. my dad said about using condoms, but i didn't. (the oldest son is my favorite mistake) my dad told me about apartments, savings...everything expect cars. cars go from point a to point b and come back again to point a. i changed the oil every three thousands miles, air filter, brake and tranny fluid, greased the ball joints...... you name it, i did it.

now its my sons turn. 26 and 22 yo don't know better than me. they try and fail and i let them. after its all said and done, i'll tell them gently you do this and your done. when i was in my 20's, i "knew" better than my old man and i'll fight ya tooth n nail!!!!! now, i have ex wife and 2 sons. i still go to dad to see what he thinks. my sons will come to me......eventually.
