Longshot powder, What do you load with it?

Besides the obvious, being a shotgun powder. I've come across load data for Longshot in .44 mag. and I think I've seen some data for rifle loads. I have a couple pounds of it, and I don't really load much shotgun (yet). The data posted on the Hodgdon site for the .44mag is very narrow 11 to 12 grs @ 1200 to 1300 range. So I just thought I'd ask you folks about your loads using Longshot. Maybe I can find another use for it. Is it suitable for reduced loads in rifles? Watcha you got?

Similar to 10mm, it's one of a few powders that there's data for for .460 Rowland. Loading a ladder test for that tonight actually.

That was my first exposure to it, trying to find a powder - that was in stock - to load .40S&W with in 2012. It worked admirably for that. I tried loading some lighter .45ACP loads with it, but that didn't work out so well.

I have experimented with Longshot in .357 and also in .45 Colt. It worked, but Unique seemed to work better. Just my opinion. I still have some Longshot, and will use it again if needed.

I would contact Hodgdon before trying it in reduced rifle loads.

I am just guessing, but some powders do not do well in that application. It seems, in my limited use, that LongShot works best at higher pressures without a lot of air space. Better safe than sorry.

A little birdie told me today that LongShot might be good in .327 loads.

I've never used it for reduced rifle loads (not sure I would recommend it either) but it's a fantastic hotrod shotgun powder and works really well in most magnum and high pressure autoloading pistol cartridges. I've used it in 357 and 44 magnum with heavy boolits at a little under magnum speeds with excellent results... it'll push boolits faster than say Unique or the like but not as quite as fast as a full on magnum powder like H110, etc. I've got 4 pounds left that I plan on using for working up some middle of the road 500 Magnum loads.

Like you discovered, it has a fairly narrow working window as far as charges go. I've found it to be an all or nothing powder and it almost always prefers to be loaded near/at max--velocities become erratic when going under recommended reloading data so make sure you're shooting over a chronograph to see what it's doing.

That's what I got it for also. I haven't got around to working up any shotgun loads with it yet. I just thought I'd look into seeing what else I can do with it. I'll likely load up some .44's with it also, just to see what happens, and also to go easy on my a2400 reserves since it seems to be sold out again.

I'm trying it in heavy 9 (147-155) and 10mm (200-220) loadings. Need to test them.
