Venting the M1 gas plug for straight pull operation.

I posted this earlier over in the Gunsmithing forum, but thought maybe it might be more appropriate to do so here.

I have a couple of spare gas plugs for my M1 and was considering drilling one so as to use the rifle for a straight pull bolt action for certain loads.

Does anyone know which size hole (or holes) to drill in the end of gas plug to insure the gas escapes without the operating system being activated?

................I don't but would suggest 1/8" as a place to start. What would seem to be ideal for that would be to have just enough for the action to unlock the bolt. Would make pulling the op-rod, bolt and case out easier. I put a gas tap on my Swedish Ag42B and adjust it just so. It backs the case and bolt back about a 16th or so. Effortless hand operation from that point.
