help with a 7mm/08 start load 150gr

looking for loads for 150gr bullets (jacketed) for 7mm/08. 150gr b/c I want one weight to shoot hunting/plinking and I hunt elk (no 130 grainers!) I know that 760 and H414 are good (and the same if I remember) but see many people using h4350 too. I already have varget and would think that it may make a decent powder for out-of-primary-powder loads. Any loads would be appreciated (of course using 140-150gr bullets)

I load for two different rifles in 7mm-08 first load is in a Rem700 mountian rifle has a short barrel I use Rem brass, CCI200 LR primers, 42.0grs VihtaVuori N140, behind a Sierra 140gr SBT. The other rifle is a longer barreled Sako action I use all the same componets except the powder I use N150 43.2 grs. Hope this helps both loads shoot well in their respective rifles but open up if shot in the other. My hunting round in the Sako I use a Nosler Accubond not the Sierra SBT. I only have whitetails so havnt tried 150gr bullets

I no longer load for the 7mm08, I used to have a Kimber 84, settled on and shot .75 groups all day with Nosler 150 partitions, Fed 210m, and I don't remember weight of IMR4350. I would think one of the 4350's is where I would start, it's a great cartridge. Varget may be ok, but for light bullets.

I've been using a similar load with the 139 grain hornady spitzer (2820) for years. 48.0 grains of IMR-4350 will give you a compressed load but you're still going to need 4" drop tubes to get it in the case. RP cases and a rem 9.5 primer.

wifes model 70 loves 40 grains of Reloader 15 and a 154 Hornady round nose, and 25 grains of 5744 and the saeco sillywet gas check at 145 grains. cant remember the mold number, two diameter, one grease groove, kinda a truncated nose profile. tried the "j" bullet load in another 708, shot very well also.

my 7-08 rem mountain rifle i just sold loved sierra 149 prohunters with max loads of varget. varget is an ideal powder in 308 sized cases.

I shoot 140 grain ballistic tips and accubonds from my savage mountain rifle.
I load them over 42 grains of IMR 4064 or 42 grains of Varget. Both loads will shoot MOA or better out to 200 yards if I do my part. Coincidentally, I can use any combination of these bullets and powder charges(42gr.), interchangeably without changing zero.

DanWalker-I read Ken Water's notebook and that's one thing he mentioned, from 130gr to 150gr. I thought that there would be more of you using a ball powder (H414 or W760). Why not, is there something I don't know?

extruded is typically less sensitive to temp changes. as the 7-08 is to be used for hunting, not plinking/target, i would stick with an extruded powder.

I own a SAKO 75 Varmint Laminated stainless in 7-08 Rem and have tried several loadings with it. With a Sierra 1915 (150grs match bullet) my best load is :
- Primer CCI 200,
- Brass LAPUA .308 sized down,
- Powder Vihtavuori N 140 at 40,9grs,
- velocity 2545fps
- accuracy 3/4 MOA (when I'm OK )
That being said, the rifle prefers 40grs of Vihta N 150 with a 168 SMK (1930). Velocity is 2245fps and accuracy 1/2 MOA ( and it shoots largely better than me ).

rl-19 is worth a look too it meters like crap but shoots well.
and 4831 will work also.
too bad you don't like the 139's as the last two elk i shot didn't complain about there not being 10 gr's more bullet weight.
