WOW !?! Never seen any Cap & Ball Revolver with that kind of "sight"
Don't Know what to Say. Just checked my three, one CVA Brass Frame and two Navy Arms Steel Frame, all .44cal, all have POST Front Sights.
All mine are 25-30+years old.

Maybe its a factory porting job, lol
Are the two holes in the top of the barrel Tapped ?
If so, What Thread ?
Someone may have put a custom sight on the pistol and then took it off because it didn't work.
A Screwed on Ramp might have been too tall.
Do the holes actually go all the way thru into the bore ?
Most were metric. Don't know what they did when they added the second hole
could you take a close up of any other markings on the gun besides the barrel? that will help ID the gun and era....

some body put a front sight on it. I have a early n-a .44 Remington it has a post front sight.
The original front sight was a tapered post and that is some kind of a replacement same as the grips. You will either need to make a base and sight or fill the holes and dovetail for a sight. I would do the dovetail as then you have windage adjustment. BY filing down the sight and drifting you can ger it shooting dead on.
Find a brass screw that fits the front hole, or re-drill and re-tap the front hole to a conventional size, insert screw and file it to the configuration of a post sight, or whatever shape or height you desire. You can fill the rear hole with a plug screw or black stained epoxy.
It's kind of hard to tell from a photo but the hole on the right looks off center.
Fact: Some people are alive simply because it's illegal to kill them.
The holes on the barrel go all the way through? Someone was evidently using the gun as a target revolver....modified front sight (ramp?) and modified grips. Easiest way to make the front sight (if the hole isn't tapped) is to to do as others have suggested, solder a piece of brass rod in the hole and file to shape and size.

Thanks all, i will do this. I am sure i can solder it even though it has threads, ir i will drill them out\. And i will get a plug from my local gunsmith for the second hole.

If the holes go all the way through into the bore that's not good.... now if you wanted a ported barrel it will work for that but they will be fouling traps and could cause other issues. Some years ago a customer brought a reproduction Navy revolver into the store that was missing the front sight, said it popped out while shooting. The hole was drilled all the way through on his too. I shortened the barrel to just behind the hole and dovetailed a front sight in and he was happy. That's probably what I would do with this one too if I had it.
Well.... No more holes. I took an old jag last night and did some filing. When i got the bottom part close to the same diameter as the threaded hole, i threaded it in, the steel is much harder than the brass so it threaded easily. I installed a set screw in the other hole, but need to get one a little shorter. There is no protrusion inside the barrel. Used some lock tite and its done, other than some fine sanding for finish. I really didnt want to spend a lot of time and money on this wall hanger. I will probably go out back this weekend, shoot it and then it will just go back on the wall. I have a new Pietta sheriff 1858 on the way from Cabelas.
