    Forklift Batteries

I recently purchased some lead ingots off fleabay. The description didn’t say what the lead was from and like an idiot I didn’t think to ask before purchasing. I just asked the seller and they told me the lead was from the top inner cells of forklift batteries. The only hardness test I have is the pencil test but I haven’t done it yet. Does anyone know what I have or has anyone used it before?

I've not used it, so I can't really answer your question. I will however make a comment. I'm fairly sure that those scrap forklift batteries were worth more just as they were, without cutting them up. Junk, 12 volt car batteries are worth about $10 each. They will not yield $10 worth of lead.

I would mark them 'Use in dire emergency only" put them away for just an event.

Lead from batteries manufactured over the past 30 years are not healthy for use in casting boolits.
If you happen to find yourself in a dire situation (life & death) and this is the only lead you have available for casting boolits you might need to use it as a last resort.

OK, I will bite, forklift battery lead, now melted and in ingots, what is the concern?
All of the volatiles should be gone?

Thank you for helping to educate me

So does that mean it’s good to go to Cast?

All the bad stuff is not necessarily gone and if water dropped i have read can produce some pretty nasty gases. If outside not sure would be a problem. I can tell you first hand that melting battery acid lead is a bad idea. Put some in a pot in garage with doors open and was doing something else waiting for it to melt when it hit me i didn't think i was going to get out of that garage. Will not do that again.

there are lots of people that melt batteries for the lead, not a really good idea but its usable lead. when smelted correctly pretty much all that is left is lead. I have been given lots of parts of forklift batteries by the local scrap yard, they were broken so all the acid was gone and the scrap yard did all the break down, all I took home and smelted produced very nice soft lead ingots with easy to clean out dross. batteries are only valuable to recycle places when they are "wet", once the liquid is gone no one wants them.

bottom line is if the ingots look good use them, if your worried send a sample to member BNE and have him tell you what is in them.

    Thread drift
We are taking about INGOTS made from forklift batteries
ALREADY melted and formed by the vendor
BNE chemical test already performed on another batch from the vendor.
What is the danger from using these ingots?
