    One for the dogs.

Does anyone process the excesses for a deer for the sake of dog food/snacks? A buddy of mine was telling me today he is buying his dogs lamb lung and they love it. He wasnt sure if it was dried but thats what it sounds like. So do any of y’all do anything with the left overs for your pups? Bones? Sinue?.....lungs??

I don't hunt any more, but when I did-

I used to bake the bones and give them to our dogs.

I also used to make rawhide chewies for the dogs from the hide.

Ed. What processes did you use?

Raw hide chewies sounds like a great use of the animal!

I’m thinking I’ll go pick up a big cheif smoker for starters and experiment from there.

Wow, how did I miss this...….. sorry..

All I did was soak the hide in a plastic trash can with water and lime powder from the hardware store.
It is just ground up marble, and is also used for pickles.

I'd soak it for about 10 days, and poke it every couple days to sort of stir it.
And keep a brick on top so it all stays under water.
The lime makes the hair turn loose.

Lay it out, scrap the fur off, rinse it in fresh water,
cut it into strips 2-3 inches wide, long enough to tie a knot in, and let it dry in the sun.

They look better if you stretch them out, but the dog didn't care.

Hope someone gets a kick out of this. I have always tried to use every bit of the animal. I had made and dried dog treats and had them in a container on top of fridge, my dad came over and without asking walked into the living room holding said container eating DUKE's dog treats. Didn't kill him, but he does not plunder through my kitchen anymore without asking.

Years back the dogs got the lungs and trachea. Penned hogs got the rest, bones and all. Hides were salted and sold in town after the season. Things have changed!!

All through duck season my wife's dog waits for me to come home with ducks. while I'm cleaning birds he sits and waits for bites. After a few years the orange cat figured there must be something going on there, now he's claiming tidbits too. Then the black cat decided he must be missing out on something good and he joined the group. Now when I come home from hunting its like I have my own fan club.

I boil the bones with a little salt and spices. Then I dry them in the oven.

Years ago, we bought what we called it slump, ground up unborn caves and stuff, from the slaughterhouse, came in 40 lb. blocks, frozen, for the dogs. Any roadkill we could get also went to the dogs, any trapped animal, after skinning, got fed to the dogs. All the fish we could get, was dried and fed to the dogs. Never waste food.....

A couple friends are big into bow fishing. Carp are an invasive species here in Mi. and we have bow fishing tournaments where the winner is judged by the total weight of carp harvested. Most goes to waste. These guys clean all theirs and can it for their dog food. I always thought it was a good idea that now seems to be catching on in their circle of bow fishing friends.

Make sure you’re not getting quick lime!

You look for the label with the pickle recipes on it.

Whenever we have a cow butchered, I always have them cut the leftover bones down for ‘soup bones’ which pretty much all go to the dogs. They love when I pull in with 16+ boxes of beef and can hardly wait for me to get them loaded into the freezers.

The charolais we just had processed yielded 560# meat in the wrapper plus 73# of soup bones. I do pay for them to cut up the bones, but I think it’s worth it.
