    Mini Lathe Question

I just got a Chinese mini Lathe. It has a 100mm three jaw chuck. If I want to use a 125mm 4 jaw chuck, do I need an adapter to the mounting flange?
    Thanks

What brand of lathe is it?

Chances are the spindle threads are common ones so just look for a 4 jaw chuck with those spindle threads. That small chuck capacity size increase has nothing to do with the spindle threads.

The chuck is not threaded to the spindle. The spindle has a flange as part of it. The chuck bolts to the flange.

Okay now you have a lathe its time to start thinking like a lathe owner. Make the flange you need with the lathe and a drill press. Turn dia to fit chucks recess, and the flange on spindle. Lay out the hole pattern with a set of dividers and drill the holes. Mount on spindle and bore the center hole.

Go with Littlemachine shop. I put a 5" chuck on my 7x10 and the adapter plate is 5" diameter. You would need 5" round stock, some way to cut it square, and the 4" chuck is only rated for 3.15" with the outside jaws. You could maybe drill some holes and mount it to the faceplate but it would be a lot simpler to get the adapter for around 30 dollars.

No, you need the correct backplate to fit the chuck to the spindle. As a previous poster pointed out, LittleMachineShop [still based in Pasadena CA, the town I grew up in! ] will have everything you need.
