What surplus powders are useful in the 45/70? I use strictly cast from 385 to 440 grains with gas check. Any ideas?

I like the surplus 4895. 4895 is one of my favorite powders in my 45-70
Joe
I have used Surplus IMR4895 in the 45-70 with good success. Use a 420gr Ballisti-cast LFNGC and 48gr powder. Not a max load but still accurate.
The 444 Marlin likes it also with a 290gr cast bullet.
Try SR4759. It is one of the best for 45-70 and cast bullets. It is designed to be very bulky. It is an old standard reduced load/cast bullet powder. A pulldown version is available. I think it came from frangible bullet cartridges.
I've gotten excellent results using WC-846 w/ a 400 gn. cast. In my Marlin Guide Gun, 49gn. works well for about 1350 fps. Your results may differ...

820 works well for lower velocity stuff.
Lloyd,
What loads are you using in your 45-70 w/ 820? I have quite a bit of it.. I have both the LEE 340 and the 405 FP for the 45-70...I have looked high and low for 45-70/wc820 data to no avail (castpics, search function, cross-referencing AA#9 etc). Any suggestions for starting loads I could try with these bullets?
thanks
AFRecruiter, have you talked to the CarpetMan? He too was an Air Force recruiter. Now he only recruits cats for jerky and sheep for a less worthy purpose...
Ditto on 4895 with 400 gr+ bullets.
