That's a lot of lead for such a short case on those 45-70's! I bought a box, years ago, for an older gentleman at a gun show, terribly nice fellow! He told me you could outrun one, but when it hit it would level a brick wall! I'm understanding what he meant now, very cool pics, thank you!
The .45-70 cases are headstamped "F 6 (or 10) 87". From what I've read, they switched from copper cases in 1888.
I have a .50-70 Trapdoor that shoots a larger chunk of lead but I haven't seen any original ammo for that rifle.
That is pretty neat. Thanks for sharing.
I thought the same thing when I first glanced at the photo. The leather loops that the cartridges are in make it look like a really long bullet and a short case. That's a lot of lead for such a short case on those 45-70's!
I think I have one 45-70 round that old, maybe a little older, as it's inside primed.
Very nice! I love the McKeever with the copper cased 45-70s! The 45 ACP is great as well - I've never seen the canvas strap before! Thanks for sharing!
Nice. The .45-70 was popular with the military for a very long time due to its excellent stopping power. If someone was hit with the heavy .45 bullet it would definitely stop them. It pretty much didn't matter where someone got hit either. What is super terrifying was the Gatling Guns in .45-70 caliber. Those would rain down a mountain of lead on the enemy and tear them up big time. Houses, and most other things to hide behind would not do much to slow down or stop those bullets.
I went to the James Julia auction in Maine a few years back. They let you handle any firearm that's for sale.
