Using paper to find the correct patch thickness

Years back I read somewhere of a shooter finding the correct patch thickness by packing paper between the ball and cloth patch.
If I recall various layers of roll your own cigarette paper where used. The paper mics around .001". so a thinner patch was used and the size "built up" until optimum was found.

Does any body recall this.I have a hazy idea of it mentioned on a forum discussing the Dutch Schultz method.

    Thanks

have been doing that for decades using ez wider rolling paper 'tween patch and ball.

HMMMM.......I have never heard of this. I wouldn't think a rolling paper would stand up to the environment inside a rifle barrel when its fired. I'm not saying it wont. I just wouldn't have thought it would, as they are made to burn away to nothing. Interesting.

It is a lot easier to measure the bore diameter and the ball diameter then subtract the ball diameter from the bore diameter to get the paper thickness.

rolling paper is added for testing purposes, thickening the cloth patch. when the ball/paper/cloth patch works best, measure the cloth and papers and then get that thicker cloth.
