Winchester Self Loader recoil springs

The Winchester .35 & .351 Self Loading rifles use the same recoil spring. I cannot find a replacement for the .401 recoil spring, which is approx. 5 coils longer than the .351 spring. Can 2 springs be "mated" at the proper length, with a spacer or whatever in between? Wolff Springs would not answer that question due to liability issues.

I'm not mechanically sure how that would work but I would be interested in trying to source a few myself... maybe if we got enough 401 owners together we could have a "run" of them made. Feel free to PM me if that option arises.

I asked Wolff Springs if they could just make a longer spring for a .351 that I could use but they only make "gun specific" springs. The spring in my .401 is probably fine, but it is old.

maybe tell them you want a 401 spring? give them a measurement or two and go from there...

My .401 needs a new spring, I lost a couple coils off the end of it. Come to think of it, I also need a new buffer as well. The original was dried and cracked into pieces. Any ideas on how to crack that nut?

Wolff Springs said that they don't have any plans to make springs for the .401. Numrich sells buffers. For what it's worth, I took this pic at the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody last week. Based on the pic and it's dimensions, I figured that the gap in the buffer pocket cover should be approx. .05". One buffer is not that thick so I cut two equally to get that gap.
