    Hard range lead!

went to the range the other day, after shooting spent 20 min with a large soup ladle made of wire and picked 40# with it. Refined it and ended up with 36# very few jackets in it and the lead was very hard rang instead of clunk. Cast fine though and as I said very hard , no don't have a hardness tester.

I'd guess that it was at the pistol range and they shoot a lot of commercially cast boolits there. Probably a "hardball" mix of 92% lead, 6% antimony and 2% tin for about 15-16 BHN. You did real good!

That was my thought as well, sounds like someones been shooting some pricey hardcast hunting ammo at the range. Their loss is your gain!

I have a lot of range lead from a pistol range that is tested at 15 bhn and higher . At one time there were a lot of shooters buying there bullets for reloading from a local commercial caster that used reclaimed shot for the most part .Marvin

A lot of the com-cast stuff I used in the past was around 18. I use 9-12 for just about everything I cast. 18 is just too hard for what I need.

My range scrap mostly falls somewhere between 10 and 14. I'm plenty happy with that.

probably got a bunch of lazercast in there.
that stuff is like 4,000 on the bhn scale. [okay I probably typed 1 too many 0's]

Some of the old time casters here use to use pure lino .Send it to me Frank.Or someone closer to you might have a hardness tester.USPS might loose the boolts again tho lol.

If it was around 15 BHN, kudos, high fives, belly bumps, etc..............

Means a lot of morons were throwing some expensive lead downrange.

Keep that stuff to mix with softer lead to make some 12ish BHN. Perfect for handgun.
