Hondo

Some of you may remember,last fall I got a Golden Retriever pup.He is 8 months old now.

I found out today I will never be able to hunt him.I may not be able to watch him grow old.You see,he has hip dysplasia.The worst case the vet has ever seen,according to her.She is really PO'd at the breeder,being that she owns Golden's too.

Here are 2 pics,1 of Hondo and 1 of his x-ray's.Maybe there is a vet here that might add more than I can.I know what pain feels like,I sure hate it for my friend.

Is he having trouble getting around, signs of pain ? it's sad to see that when he's so young, Friendly looking boy he is.

Some pain,you can tell by the look on his face.The Vet gave meds,we'll see how they do.He doesn't like steps.He has started to take naps more often.She said it was so severe that he may not be a candidate for surgery.I'll find out Monday on that issue.

Believe me this man is a genious,he has a large animal Hospital here in England and has pulled off many amazing operations.Some of the things he achieves are remarkable.

Hope you do,nt think I am interfering.I just thought that you might get some Advise from this highly skilled gentleman who is also a very caring and compassionate person.He has rebuilt animals with the most appalling injuries.

No sir,you are not.England is far,far away and well out of my finances.I am working with a new vet and she is setting me up with a surgeon in Nashville.But he has said,without actually seeing Hondo,that the left side is beyond being rebuilt.He has seen the xrays.

I will though,email a copy of the xray and ask his opinion.

Dang, Taylor! I really hate to hear this. Our dogs, for real "dog men," are as loved and important to us as our children, almost. One tip. I've always tried to get my dogs from well proven hunting stock. Dogs raised in kennels and puppy factories tend to, I think, have more genetic problems than those whose sires come from proven hunting stock. This has worked out very well.

My old Brittany, Bill, had hip problems that eventually made me have him put to sleep. When life got to be nothing but pain, and he'd look at me with that pleading look he had, and he couldn't even lay down and be still without pain, I knew what I had to do after several days of that. He wasn't going to ever get any better, and he couldn't stand what was on his plate at the time, and it was the most difficult and tearful thing I've ever had to do.

He came from both hunting and pet stock, and was a real force of nature. After than, I determined that I'd never again get a dog that didn't come from genuine hunting stock. If they can hunt, the liklihood that they'll pass on good genes is much enhanced, I think. A good hunting dog may run all day, and this kind'a weed out any genes that don't allow them to do this, I think? Anyway, that's what I've resolved, in order to avoid what you are going through now. I wish you and your beautiful dog well.

Taylor, you may get the same answer but give the vet school at Texas A&M a call. I'm thinking along the lines of a complete artificial hip. I hope everything works out for you and your dog. He looks like a joy to be around.

Sorry to hear that about your dog my last lab and yellow lab had Addison's disease the meds for that warlike hundredand ffty bcks amonth for life then she got blastomycsis and wind up going blind for about 2 weeks got some of her vision back but the vet bill ran up into the thousands and very quickly we did lose her just about this time last year best of luck with your puppy
