I bartered a bit with my old cowpoke brother and came away with a dusty Savage 9317R.
Soon to be a resident of my truck for critter control! A neat "pill bottle" of CCI pointy plastic tip .17HMR ammo came with it.

I cleaned the Montana dust and rust off, painted the barreled action flat black, and installed my trusty old Weaver K10 on it.

A Ranger Model 101-13, made by Stevens from 1934-1943. Over all dirty but good condition, the Weaver 66 scope has some rust issues unfortunately. Overall it should cleanup easily.

Picked up a Remington 788 in .223 this weekend.

You’ll like the 788. I had one in 222 Remington. I bought it new, took it home and put a Timney trigger on it,glas bedded the action and free floated the barrel. I got 1 hole groups all day long. My favorite load was 19.3 gr 4198 and a 55 gr Hornady SX bullet. It was deadly on ground hogs. The 788 action is very stiff and the lock time is extremely fast, it all contributed to accuracy. Tim

Picked up a Remington 788 in .223 this weekend.

The 788s are great rifles.
I have two, a 222 and a 22/250, both very accurate.

I was in a friend's gun shop in Sydney years ago and he was ordering stock off the Remington sales rep. He wanted several 788s and the rep explained that he mightn't be able to fulfil the order as they were in the process of discontinuing the 788s as they were cutting into the model 700's sales and the production of two different types of rifles was uneconomical.
They have a bit of a cult following.
From what I have heard, don't try and refinish the stock, you'll never get it to look as good as the original finish. My mate did one and no matter how hard he tried, it looked very anaemic.
