    silhoutte boolet

I am in the process of getting ready to shoot silhouette out to 500 yards with a 45-90. I am wondering what weight boolit is best suited for this. I have read here somewhere that a 500 grainer and up do not stabilize much before 1-200 yards? Is my best option to use 2 different weights relative to distances?

I shoot a 45-90 occasionally in local shillouette matches. I have used the Lyman 457125 510 grn round nose govt bullet with good results, the 535 grn lyman postell with good results ( maybe a little better than the 510 grner) but my best bullet load so far is a 547 grn "Shillouette" bullet cast from a set of old west mould blocks. This bullet is very good in my rifle from 100-500 yds. ( it is hard on the swinging targets though). As to your rifle twist rate will determine bullet wieght length it will stabilize and your shoulder will determine power level you load to. A 45-90 eats alot of lead and powder fast. 50 rds plus sighters can be a long tiring day with the heavier recoil. I am considering a load to 45-70 levels with a filler of cream of wheat to make up powder space.

Can you share any starting loads for smokeless powder by chance?
