    Subsonic .458 Socom

Since its using a AR/M16 rifle I hope it fits here,if not I can move it. I am building a 458 Socom AR and was wondering if anyone has worked up any Subsonic loads using a .460 480grn cast?. I have searched around and have found some load data but not much regarding Subsonic and especially not with cast,i have read that Reloader 7 is a good Sub powder with this caliber and I have plenty so that would be great if true. I also have plenty of Unique,1680 and 3031 if anyone has worked loads with them. Just looking for any info,i do try and search before asking but this is such a new caliber there isn't much out there yet. Thanks a lot to anyone that might be able to help. This also would be out of a 12-14inch barrel,1x14 twist.

This load penetrated 24" hard packed sand then 8" telephone pole .. found about 2 ft further laying on the ground

PS I tried both Lee 500 gr molds .. My gun shot the pointed bullets better very time

little update. Got suppressor going and subs decent. I am usigf the NOE .480 hp. Great penetration and expansion. Cycles fine. Sub MOA to 75 yards and then something strange is going on. I am revisiting the issue this AM. I am beginning to wonder if they are becoming unstable after 75 yards. Anyone ever experience this sort of thing? Literally 1/2 MOA at 50 same at 75. then 100.......I am stumped. Cant hit the paper or I am shooting over the target frame.

Depending on your barrel twist and speed very well could be unstable

I've experienced poor accuracy with 458S suppressed. Not what you're describing though. Mine were inaccurate at all distances. Are you noticing any keyholing at any distance? Make sure to inspect the suppressor closely for any baffle contact. Better accuracy without the suppressor?

Suppressor design is apparently EXTREMELY important with the large slow bullets (in addition to twist rate, but almost all 458S are 1:14). I had 3 manufacturers attempt a design, and a 4th that I contacted who said they also are experiencing accuracy issues with their asymmetrical baffle design.

Theory of all involved is that turbulence inside the can is able to really destabilize the large, slow subsonic projectiles. Only success I've had is with fully symmetrical baffles, along with the associated decrease in effectiveness of the suppressor.

certainly something to think about. Once i saw stability at 50 yds. i never screwed the can off except for cleaning and inspection. All seemed ok. I will have to try unsupressed and see what happens.

Strange I don't have any issues out to 100 Yds .. When it warms up I will have to try some 150 and 200 yd shots just to see what happens
now I size mint to .4595 wound if that have any impact ?

Never mentioned what twist your running. The big heavy, long bullets need more twist to be stable at that low of a speed. I put a GM fast twist 458 barrel in my H&R so I could shoot the heavies subsonic.

twist is 1/14. I am going to open up one of the sizers to .459 or so and see if it makes a difference. they are .4585 currently.
