    Using gas checks for jackets?

Ok random thought of the day....

I love shooting g my hornet and like the idea of using rimfire shells to make my own bullets but from what I gather without trimming the cases I'm looking at about 55ish grains, got thinking if it's possible to make smaller jackets out of maybe 30 cal gas check, not sure if possible and couldn't find anything using search or google. Thinking reasonable copper jackets for 40 grain projectiles.

    Thoughts please brains trust?

    cheers

    You have options,
.22 short, good luck finding some at the range.
Use less lead in a rimfire jacket, leaving the nose of the bullet empty.
If you are using 22 gas checks you would be better off casting to use a stronger alloy.
If you want to use a larger gas check, reformed to have some length you will need to make sure you center the gas check for reforming. Then you still might be needing a trimmer to square the end of the jacket.

I have thought the same thing, drawing down inexpensive large caliber Hornady gas checks for small caliber jackets. Haven't got around to trying it yet but I suspect it should work rather well.

Yeah BT my thoughts exactly, I guess a rough way to figure out what size GC would be to weigh a jacket and a gas check and find something close, like I said I'm looking for a shorter jacket to run about 40 grain projectiles, it seems trimming rimfire cases is a slow process and I seem to remember reading about using large gas checks for half jacket pistol bullets (45's for 357???)

like I said, just a random thought and all theory at the moment as I'm not swaging yet

    cheers

Gas checks should work great with the right draw die but for light weight 22cal do keep an eye out for 22 shorts!

RCE lists a copper jacket that works great for the projectiles you are wanting to make. Bought some a little while ago and they work wonderfully!
