"Wolf Rods" -Brass Cylinder/ short barrel cleaning rods

Effective immediately - Since I can not guarantee I can ship during the week as I have a full time job that runs well past Post Office hours most days I will be shipping rod orders out on the Saturday after payment is received. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and for any it may cause. ~Ben

This is the official “Wolf Rod” ongoing group buy thread so we don’t clutter up the S&S forum. The poll up at the top is just to get an idea of the handle options you might look for to be offered in the future Snail mail forms of payment only, No PP. If you have "wolf rods" you've put your own handles on feel free to post a picture to give others ideas on handle options/materials & solutions.

For those familiar with the “wolf rod you can skip this paragraph. The “Wolf rod” is the idea of a good friend of mine who is our pistol director at our club and myself, we put on dozens and dozens of matches a year and have a lot of cleaning to do on our personal guns. We wanted a short stubby solid brass cleaning rod for cleaning cylinders on revolvers as well as the short barrels on various BUG’s. Trying to clean short barrels or cylinders with long steel or even coated rods cause much cringing as coating can get stripped or rods scrape against crowns of beautifully blued guns.

I will be making two standard rods-handles are not currently an option sorry for the inconvenience it may be a future offering if I find a supplier I’m happy with but it is currently not being offered Cost of handles and shipping would also add about $4 to the total cost of the rod If you don’t see that as a problem speak up and I’ll see if there is enough interest to try and supply rods with handles. That being said a file handle drilled out and the rod JB welded in makes for a superb handle. If you want compact look at drawer knobs as well.

First being offered is a ¼” diameter threaded for either 8-32 (civilian threads, most common) or 8-36 (military threads for those with a lot of surplus jags etc) You will need to specify what thread you wish for the ¼” rods. Standard length is 2.5” long. These rods are $6 each shipped.

The 2nd rod at the request of Outpost75 and urging of lots of other members I’ll also be making a ⅜” diameter rod threaded 5/16 x 27 for shotgun threaded mops, brushes jags and what have you. Again this rod will be 2.5” long. These are $7 each shipped.

Each “Wolf Rod” currently is made with 3 grooves cut into the handle end to facilitate grip with your handle of choice when using epoxy or even a tight press fit. If you wish Knurling or just the handle end left plain please state that along with your payment.

CUSTOM RODS- any length other than the standard length of 2.5” can be made, due to my work schedule & material availability it may take up to 2 weeks to get your custom rod shipped. I apologize in advance however I just want to be upfront about the possibility of that long of a delay. I have lots of 1/4" rods ready to ship right now, Currently all the 3/8 rods I have material for are spoken for but I have a wait list for when more material comes in.

Email or Pm to place orders, please specify threads!

    Thanks for doing this.

I'm good for two short 3/8" rods with jag extensions to convert them to 6" revolver rod, as discussed previous post on the other thread.

    Good morning.

Can I put in an order for a 2 1/2 inch standard thread and a custom 8" standard thread.
Just the rods. I will do the handles.

    Thanks

After you receive them and use them for awhile I'm all ears for feedback. Positive or negative. Also feel free to post pictures of what you figure out for handles.

for those looking at aftermarket handles: Hobby Lobby has a large number of wooden balls in various sizes. I'm even considering an egg shape as a handle. Prices are mostly by the package so the individual price is pretty low.
    .
I'll post some photo when I get my WolfRods (take a bite out of cleaning) outfitted.

I just got to this thread as a result of it being referred to in another thread. I would like one 1/4" standard thread & one 3/8 threaded for 8-32 instead of 5/16x27. Also one 1/4" standard thread, 6" long and one 3/8" threaded 8-32, 8" long.

I'm in no hurry so just hold all until you catch up with special orders.

I would be interested if someone comes up with a handle solution that allows the rod to rotate. Doesn't really matter for cylinder use but I like the rod to rotate when cleaning barrels. I guess with a ball handle you could just let the ball rotate in your hand.

Alright, alright, alright (think Matthew McConaughey) -- my wife just rolls her eyes
    .
Stopped by Hobby lobby this a.m.
    .
Got some shapes that work well in my arthritic hands; notice the size compared to the rods. The spool shapes already had a 3/8" hole but one was slightly undersized. Check the fit before having epoxy on the rods and no, I didn't mess up here.
    .
Eggs were a nice shape to hold and had to eyeball the center. Got very close and am happy with the results.
    .
Best news is they were only $1.00 a piece though you did have to by them in lots of 4.
    .
Epoxied 1/2" into the shapes. With the 2" exposed and there is a bit of 'length' on the cleaning jag or brush there is plenty of room for either my Vaquero .45 Colt or S&W 586 (yes, there was a blued version)
    .

Walter Laich picked his handles out locally, I'll be offering handles here in the next week or so once I get shipping and pricing figured out. Stay tuned

ETA: would anybody be interested in a 3/16 rod suitable for .22's?
