    Bator in 22-250 ONLY

I've been looking for good load data for the Bator bullet in 22-250. I find some threads, but they usually branch off into other cartridges like 223 Rem, 222 Swift 22 Hornet, etc. To the point that my eyes cross. I'm looking specifically for 22-250, Bator cast bullet (~53 gr), 1-14 twist, a 2300 to 2700 fps goal and decent accuracy at 100 to 150 yards. Are there any successful loads out there, given good bullet screening, and culling the defective ones?

I did just try 13 gr of Trail Boss, but the group was horrendous at 25 yards. So I'm looking for another starting point, and trying not to blow myself up.

    What's your barrel twist ?
I can only assume most 22-250 twist rates are fairly fast...faster compared to the other calibers that you mentioned, which are yielding better results.
The Bator is a short fat boolit and likes a slower twist rate.

I just use the same loads I use in my 223.
the exact same load in both the 250 and the 220.
22.5grs of I-4895 will get you there.
I prefer the slower powders for the higher velocity's.

I've been using 6gr of TiteGroup in my Savage 22-250. This is my 22lr replacement. I powder coat the Bator and seat it out as long as I can. Accurate plinker and no recoil. GP

well, you should have no problems with that 14 twist rate.
Time to try some different powders.

In 223, I use 3.5 to 4 gr. of red dot, with the bator, for a 1600fps load and 3" groups, not the greatest, but OK. I switched boolits for 223.

In 22 Hornet and Bator, I use Lil'gun. I think the load was around 7gr. ???
    That'd give me 1" to 1.5" groups (100yd).

    What is your alloy?
I'd guess 50/50 lino/COWW might be a good place to start.

If it were me I would do like R5R stated and use the slower powders. The fast pistol powders will end up with way to much pressure before you hit the 2300 fps mark, at least in my experience. I'm having my best groups with leverevolution and .3 dacron(2500fps), h4831sc (2800fps), Magpro (2700fps) and even the surplus wc860 (2600fps), but I'm using a 55 and 62 grained at the moment. I've got the Bator but probably will never use it.

Lee has loads for w760, 4895, blc2 and varget. I've been using their loads for jackets and reducing by 20% and working back up. With those powders you might want to reduce 30%.

Correction to my earlier statement, with 4895, varget, and blc2. I would drop down to about 50%case fill and a .3 or.4 gr tuff of dacron, then work up to best accuracy.

Thanks for the info guys. I have some good starting points. I'm now struggling with sizing these little pills. For some reason, the GC isn't seating square on the base of the bullet and the little buggers look like a mini version of the leaning tower of pisa! Using a Lee push through sizer. Think I'm going to try a Lyman lubersizer next.

Try pushing the so the check goes in first. Works better for me than going nose first.

Like Silverboolit I have learned on the .223 to drop them in nose first. With my Lee C type press mounted upside down it works pretty well, saves a lot of frustration.

I have not done it on my Bator mold yet. But on one of my 30 cal molds I did take an exacto knife with a new sharp blade and shaved a thin ring right off the edge of the cavity where the gas checks go. It can make them harder to put on, but they tend not to fall off.

But, it is easy to take too much. Hard to put it back on.
