8.0 grains of UNIQUE is your load...I have never put a bullet on top of this that WASN'T accurate...no matter what the weight. If you want a little more velocity try 9.0...that is what I am using in my hunting loads.

That Lee Martin design looks great...you aren't likely to ever recover one from a deer unless it is hit dead on in the chest...

...and put a good HEAVY crimp on these rounds....it really helps with the consistency of the powder burn...

...why not in the crimp groove...too long for your cylinder?

A dummy round crimped in the crimp groove would not fully chamber, although it looked like it would fit in the cylinder.

A common problem with bullets that have a full diameter and wide bearing surface in front of the crimp groove...

When I have one like that I size to .409 and it works without degrading accuracy.

I size my NOE keith to .410 and seat them as deep as I can and stay in the crimp groove. with clean chambers this has worked, and ensuring it is seated straight

Chronoed a couple of loads yesterday...

    Freedom Arms 97 5.5"
    Winchester .41 Magnum cases
    CCI 300 Large Pistol Primers

Accurate Molds 41-415V/10.0 grains of UNIQUE...1294 fps

    https://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet...bullet=41-215V

Accurate Molds 41-250F/9.0 grains of UNIQUE....1186 fps

    https://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet...bullet=41-250F

Both bullets can be crimped in the crimp groove and make max LOA for the short 97 and Taurus Tracker cylinders.. Other than a full wadcutter nothing has a bigger meplat.

that is wicked wicked boolit-- since much of the wound is determined by meplat size that would be a really hard hitting bullet. It might on larger animals-- what ever that is-- be penetration limited.

I can tell you that the 215V was shot through 5 water jugs and then buried itself in a soft body armor panel....and the bullet could have been reloaded and shot again...

for what ever ti is worth i use one of the heavy H110 loads with a 220KT hp . Have not clocked it yet but will -- the fired hulls drop easily from my 6.5" blackhawk

One can fill a case with H110/296 so the base of the bullet sits right on top of the powder eliminating all the airspace. Have been doing that for decades with no pressure signs, very low extreme spreads/standard deviation and the best accuracy at the highest (safest) velocity.

I know some people who compress H110/296 but can't see the point...velocity barely increases and pressure signs go way up...

RJM: thanks for the data...confirms the Win 231 loads I've chrono'd with a 4-5/8" bbl'd 3-screw Ruger. I haven't spent much time at all with the high speed end of loading data...arthritis is no fun in my thumb joints...but do load up with some during deer season for "right below the stand" chance shots (none to date, however).

Same loads I put up for my Marlin 1894S...with 2400, 18.0 gr gives me 1680 fps and superb accuracy.

I also have some of Jeff Bartlett's #820 which he says is OK for use with accurate #9 data, but haven't gone beyond 17.0 gr which gave me 1470 fps with Remington's 210 gr JHP. It gave me nice round primers, moderate recoil and is so accurate and mild in the carbine that I've not pushed it further. Quickload shows 1654 fps with Hornady's 210 XTP with this same load so I think Jeff's suggestion to use #9 data, is close to the mark. Through the Ruger, Quickload estimates 1173 fps, but chrono's at 1086 fps, a ~90 fps difference, not completely out of whack, and not too hard on old, arthritic paws either. Accuracy was ~ 2" at 25 yds, rested.

    Best regards, Rod

    Here's the obligatory gun pxxn.

Always love seeing your guns Rod...

I had avoided all the Accurate powders until I started shooting .327 Federal several years ago... Was down to Unique and H110 for all my shooting needs....then along came the 10mms and AAC-7 and AAC-9 just worked well...so now I am hooked but as of yet not loaded any .41s with either powder as I have lots of Unique just for all the .41 loads.

My fingers are fine but have to take care of the wrist...it is slowly going... Have backed off top-end 10mm loads 100 fps and they are much more comfortable to shoot... The .500s are shot very sparingly...

Need to get out the .41 LeverGuns...they haven't been out of the safe for too long...

RJM...thanx for the comment....and I really appreciate all your work keeping this good thread alive...it's usually the first I read on CastBoolits each day. Good work, Senor...keep it up. The Ac #9 load that I use is from a lot sold by GiBrass in Owensboro KY...Jeff Bartlett's operation. I bought 16 lbs. of it and have tried it in my .44's, .357's and the .41's. I never push the limits, staying in the mid range levels and have had good luck...I use a Chrono when working up and compare with Quickload estimates. I've never run a side by side with commercial Ac#9 to cross-ck velocities however... Rod

And Thanx too, GLinn. for your kind remarks..,I've explained how I made the stocks on the 3-screw here before but here's a bit more....

I cut them from some old, half-rotted horse fencing, poplar here on our farm. The black lines in the wood are actually "spalting", a term used to describe the infusion of bacteria in the wood grain/structure, in the rotting process. This particular board had been up in one of our pastures for ~30+ years and had started to rot on the nail holes. After replacing it, I cut out the obvious rotted sections, then ran it through my jointer and found these markings...& knew it would make for some pretty handgun stocks.

I killed the bacteria by heating for 1/2 hour in my wife's oven at 200 degrees, tested the wood and found that it was hard enough to use, then went to work shaping the grips. They're finished in tung oil, rubbed to a satin finish with ~5 coats IIRC. If you look closely you'll see a faint line of wood at the bottom of the grip that doesn't match...initially, when cutting the bevels, I went too far and in an attempt to salvage the work, I added an over size piece of poplar, then recut the bevels...I kinda like 'em now...does add something to the tale...Rod

If it were only one caliber, that would be one thing, but it's crazy prices across the board. It makes me shake my head to think just a few years ago I bought a Henry big boy for $700, and I didn't feel good about it then, but I wanted it anyway. It doesn't seem like there are hardly any of those midrange $600 to $1000 guns anymore. Everything is either cheap, or super expensive. I'm sure there are plenty of examples to the contrary, but that's the way it feels right now.
