For the S&W revolvers I'm trying to keep bullets from 200-300 grains in the 950-1100 fps range from a 4" barrel... Depending on the bullet it looks like 8.0 to 9.0 grains of UNIQUE will do just what I'm looking to get. The guns and my wrists should last the rest of my shooting life with those loads...

Caliber .41 and larger bore revolvers at 950 fps been taking care of issues for well over 150 years.

...really it is .40 and over... From what I have read the reason the .38-40 was so popular is because it was the lightest kicking round that was a reliable man-stopper...

Deer/pig loads for the .41 Mag?

I'm very late to the 41 Magnum and I came to it reluctantly. I was looking for a solution for deer and pig while hunting squirrels with a .22 rimfire during the Louisiana primitive firearms seasons. I am already set up to reload 44 Mag so I started looking for a Contender. It didn't take long to see I was very late to the party. A call to TC was answered by S&W and I was informed that all production had ceased and TC was for sale.
I was fortunate enough to locate a Contender at a gun store in a very small town just south of the Arkansas line. It had come in as part of an estate and was in near perfect condition, but it was a .41 mag. The price was much lower than I had budgeted even though I would have to tool up to load it, dies, molds, bullets etc. I asked store owner for ammo, but he had none. Thankfully I had the presence of mind to ask for brass. After a couple of minutes in the storage room he turned up 100 pieces of new Starline that he gave me. At the time I didn't realize what a huge blessing that was! I haven't found any brass online and only cowboy action ammunition.
Primitive deer season opens October 22nd so I have a little time to get the 41 dialed in.
If any of you hunt with the 41 I'd like to hear your suggested loads. What one mold would you choose for deer/hogs? What J bullet would you suggest? I have a good selection of powder including H-110.

Welcome to the World of 4T1....

    Jacketed for deer and hogs...
    Favorite:
    170 Sierra JHC/26.0 H110/1900 fps from a 14" TC

Second would be most any 210 JHP from Speer, Sierra, Nosler or Hornady with 22-23 grains of H110.

Cast...there are just so many good ones...

    Accurate Molds:

    41-250L

41-any of the Keith designs from 220 to 250 grains

NOE has the original Keith 220 or the updated 230 that can be had with HP pins. MP Molds has a 220 Keith that has HP and PP pins...when you can find one.

That is where I would start...Bob

    U R welcome....

The 170 Sierras are very hard to find right now. Over on GunBroker Reed's Ammo had some a few weeks ago...don't know if they have any for sale right now.

Buffalo Bore makes one of their .41 rounds using that bullet and it is smokln'...

GT bullets has a good selection of bullets for very reasonable prices. They have a 165 MP HP that I use in my FA 97 that shoots great with not a lot of recoil.

    The 250L runs with 22.0 grains of H110 for 1444 from a 6" FA 83.

Hope you try a .41 revolver one day...

My old 8-⅜" model 57 likes the GT 250 HP at velocities from 1000 to 1300 with several powders, but the two best loads I found are:
11.5 grains of VV N105, C300 primer in WW brass at 1.705" OAL for around 1050 fps, and
14.2 grains of Heavy Pistol, WLP primer in Star Line brass at 1.705" for around 1225 fps.
Both will put 10 rounds under an inch at 20 yards off a sandbag.

I plan to deer hunt this year with a 5 1/2" Redhawk this year in .41 magnum. The bullet will be a Swift A-frame 210 grain over 22 grains of WW296. I have not chron'd this load but a 215 grain cast SWC over the same 22 grains of 296 goes an impressive 1430 fps....

You have to love this thread. I have owned at least one .41 cal. revolver for 30+ years. I now have Marlins, Blackhawk,s Contenders and a Ruger No. 3 with a custom McGowan .41 cal. barrel. Yes, I was infected badly. Keep the good info coming.

    RICHP...sounds like a great collection...

If you can post a picture of that #3 that would be great...

I have a #3 .22 Hornet with 1A wood on it and have thought about converting it to .327 or .41...but it shoots so good as a .22 I have left it alone..

kinktg...that sounds like a deer killin' load...

Mine also has no. 1 wood. I shot it and an old model Blackhawk a few days ago. At fifty yards it grouped about one inch with some hand loads using jacketed sillhouett bullets, I do not know who made them. I think they were Hornady. I had shot some lead loads thru it before that group which might explain a flyer out of that group. I was just burning up a bunch of powder, not really shooting with a purpose.
