So Taffin just did his big bore belly gun series in one of the gun mags, and he completely ignored the 3" barrel Model 57!!! I kept waiting and it never showed up. SO I sent a letter with this pic and it also got nothing!

Wow, looks like I need to work up a load with some of my Sierra 170's. That's smokin'!
    How was the recoil?

Not sure about @RJM52's loads and recoil, but I love shooting the 170s. I do 24gr H110 (Sierra manual would put that at ~1600fps from their test barrel). Never chrono'ed it. From my 8" 57 they shoot about 2" low from the 210 zeroed sights, and make a real nice tight group, and my 686 with magnum loads has more recoil.
They are a blast from my 3" 657! Literally, LOL! POI is very close to 210 sighting.

I have never understood when we get the occasional "loading the 41 magnum" article, they NEVER talk about the 170s! Just 210s, and heavier cast.

Half thinking of maybe trying the 657 at a steel shoot... But should probably just make some "41 special" loads for that.

Recoil is not bad at all...the WORST kicking were the Winchester 210 J Hollow SP, 22.0 H110/210 Hornady and the WORST was the 265 MP/21 H110.

The 57 has a set of Herrett's Detective stocks and even with the heaviest loads DON'T move in your hand at all...all the shock goes right into your wrist... I normally don't shoot the heavies from DA guns any more saving for the SAs...but I had them there and wanted to know what they were doing from the 4"...

The 170s are a very tough bullet...it is Gary Reeder's favorite hunting bullet in .41...he has shot everything up to cow elk with them. Have run them with 26.5 grains of H110 but my TC Contender didn't like the load so I backed off. They run 2100 from a 20" Marlin carbine.

If you want light weight without the expense, try the MP bullet...they are available from GT Bullets if you don't cast. It is the only bullet I'm running in a FA 97 4.25"...just over 1300 fps with 14.0 of Blue Dot.

Well, after checking my inventory I was wrong about having some 170's on hand; they are a bullet that I've wanted to try but apparently never bought any.
I've been disappointed with the way LSWC's just punch through a deer with no blood trail. Although they do result in kills, it's not fun tracking with no blood to follow, so I need to work up a good hunting round with JHP's before deer season this November. Besides having some 210gr Sierras, at this time I also have a couple hundred Nosler 210's and about 1000 Hornady 210 XTP's that have apparently been reproducing while nobody's been watching.
Anyone have an educated recommendation in regard to those 3 choices? They'll either be used in a 5.5" Redhawk or a 6" S&W 657.

With 210 grain jacketed bullets 22-23 grains of H110...velocity from a 5.5-6" barrel should be in the mid-1300s...

Have found if the bullet base sits right on top of the H110 powder taking out all the airspace the load gets the highest velocity at safe working pressure and the lowest SD/ES...

The Sierra 170s are made out of Unobtainum right now.

Thank you, RJM, but my question was more in regard to which of those 3 bullet choices (210gr Sierra, 210gr Nosler & 210gr Hornady XTP) perform the best on Whitetails. We can get some pretty good sized ones here in Illinois.

I bought my last 6” 657 on G.B. about 15 years ago ,after I won the auction the seller offered me 1K of new Starline brass and 1K of the Sierra 170 gr. 41 bullets for $270.00 for all including shipping. I said yes and have only loaded one box of them ,might have to revisit them.

Hello all. Loaded up some 240 gr Rimrock Keith LSWC flat base with 8.0 grains of Unique in Starline cases. What do yall think these will run from a 4 5/8" Ruger? What would max be with Unique & this bullet?

According to GRT this load runs 24 kpsi and gives 958 fps from your Ruger with an OAL of 1.69". Max is around 10.5 gr. @ 1150 fps.
As always, work up to the max slowly, it is just an estimate.

Thank you for your help. Mine ended up at 1.67" coal crimped in the groove.

    BTW, what is GRT?

    Kinda hard to say...

If you look at my above post, the 230 Keith (new style) ran 60 fps faster than the 224 original style Keith from a 4" barrel probably from the extra pressure generated by the extra weight....have seen it before.

Since you are running a 240 with a 5/8" longer barrel I would guess your velocity to be in the 1050+- range..

GRT is Gordon's Reloading Tool, a free downloadable software similar to QuickLoad.

About the different JHP available -- 210 XTP then the sierra 210 JMHO no knowledge of 210 Nosler
I have used the unobtainable 170 gr on deer and they work well and are very damaging. Good penetration for so light a bullet with the SD of a thumb nail-- sorta. These were 100# or so swamp deer.. not very big. The XTP expands quickly and then just pushes on as long as its inertia will allow. They work like Hornady says

In case anyone is looking, Midway has the Redding profile crimp die available in both 41 special and mag. The mag one is even on clearance.
