The menu called it green chili. I knew it would not be any thing I would recognize as chili, and tried it to see what it was like. It was actually good.

Beans should be a dish on their own. If you have to mix chili with beans, one or the other has something wrong. Like beer that has to be cold, if it has to be cold to taste good, its crappy beer!

My current address says New Mexico but I can literally see things in Texas from my front yard. Spent most of my life in Texas.

Sorry; BBQ and chili are NOTHING alike other than having meat in them. NOTHING!

Yup. After reading the whole thread not too many Texians voted for beans. Yankees (pretty much everywhere but Texas) seem to think it's OK to cook beans into chili.

Right, chile is a vegetable and chili is meat. In Texas style chili cook-offs beans in the chili are a disqualification. There is to be nothing identifiable other than meat in the chili- no other solids.

I guess I'll modify the joke about the Montana cowboy meeting with St. Peter. When asked why he was there, "I put beans in the chili when I moved to Texas". IIRC the original was 'he kicked over the motorcycle of the bikers attacking a young lady, a few moments ago'.
    Whatever!

I have had it both ways, so I would take three bowls of each. Being in the Yankee section of the country, beans in the chili is the predominant way. It is really the only way that my palate has enjoyed the Red Kidney Bean. There are farmers that grow them things, ya know. Though, with a couple of bowls of no bean chili your belly feels like it has just had its carnivorous void filled. Maybe, for a couple of hundred years down there in TX those cows just ate off the range and they had more stewing meat than produce like beans, henceforth no beans in the chili. This is before their agriculture was developed. Either way when the day is cold and damp enough to give you a chill the chili that gets your nostrils cooking and a little tear in the corner of your eye along with the next day knowing what you ate the day before when you are on the throne is the best chili. Or, at least for the pre '50s digestive system.lol
May you hands be warmed on a frosty day.

Well, o love it with or without beans. Now to open another can o worms....i eat it over macaroni. My mom is from chicago and we grew up with chili over elbow mac. Just a good way to stretch the meal dollar.

In Chiraq we have been calling it "CHILI MAC" for as long as I can remember but then again that is only about 80 years.

You'd have to call it something else if you put beans in it.
