    Talking New 50 cal toy!

Hi all, I picked up my new/ slightly used 4" 500 S&W today. I got it on Gunbroker. They guy said he sold it and the buyer took it to the range, put one cylinder full of factory ammo through it and brought it back. Oh darn, now it's used and I saved a pile of money on my car insurance. Oh I mean gun.

I did pick one box of factory 400 JSPs just to see what they are like, but will probably only shoot cast through it. I have the Lee 440gn mold.
Hopefully I'll be able to get out and shoot it tomorrow.
    Should be fun.
Oh, the single action trigger pull on this thing is incredible. Very crisp, no creep, not too heavy or light. They got the porriage just right on this one.

Lar45, sounds like the story about when S&W came out with the scandium 357 mag. Guy buys one and goes out with one full box of ammo. 6 rounds later the gun is back for sale with 44 unfired rounds in the box. Me, well the 44magnum is about all the fun I can stand. But man does your revolver look nice. Hope she shoots as well as it looks.

Nice looking critter, for sure. Load up some WW-296 or H-110 behind those castings........that spark arrestor/muzzle brake will assist greatly in lighting up hillsides at dusk. I know my M-29's x 4" did fine work with such illumination assignments.

Thats the way my kind of deal was made on my 2nd 454 SRH,guy had a Taurus that he sent back 3 times. Finally gave up and bought the ruger, then found out he wanted no part of it after shooting 2 cylinders full. Too much recoil for him. Sold me the gun, brass, dies, complete package for a song.

Okay, now here's a question. I'm thinking about loading some of the LEE REAL 50 cal muzzle loader boolits for the 500 S&W. they drop at .502" and 360gns. It is a hollow base, so will I need to keep the pressures down? Or would it just be a bad idea?
I have the Lee 440gn mold, it's a gascheck design and I'm still waiting on gaschecks.
    thoughts?

Sounds like a good boolit for such an animal! Use the slowest powders on the bench, while keeping ignition reasonable, to keep peak pressure as low as possible until boolit is throughly past the forcing cone. Just might be an application for 4227 with mag pistol primers, or plain mild rifle primers if will ignite properly. ... felix

    Ouch !

    HI,
I was up at the range a couple of mo. back & a guy was shooting a S&W 50 W/ factory loads. he let me shoot one , It was enough. Then I mentioned they cost $2 a round. Double OUCH!
My palm was brused & I couldn't shoot my 44 for about a wk.
He was also shooting a 505 jeffery at $12 a round. I didn't even ask to shoot that.

44man, there you go with multiple identities. I'm easily confused enough as it is.

I shot the Factory Magtech 400 JSPs and they went 1200fps and weren't bad to shoot at all. They were listed as 1600fps on the box. This is a 3" barrel though.

The 360 isn't the REAL bullet, it's the Minnie. I haven't shot any yet. I did load some of the Lee 440s though.

This was 10 rounds about 890fps at 25yds. When I can steal more time, I'll see if adjusting the load will get rid of the out lyers.

The trigger on this is really nice!!!

I was interested in the Lee 354gr modern mini, looks like a .500 wadcutter and designed as a target mini. With that big meplat I bet it would hit like a truck. Anyone try this yet. The 500 360gr improved mini looks good too.

Take some 777, add just enough to get a slightly compressed load with a cast boolit. At the range you will shoot one cyliner and you will have everyone there standing around you by the time you are done asking "hey man, what you shoot'n". Rather light loads too, so they don't beat the @#$%^&* out of you.

Don't need to hot rod all the time.

    Enjoy
