I've only been shooting 45/70 for 15 years or so, so I'm still learning, and need some experienced counsel regarding plain based bullets, hardness, velocities etc.
I have Browinings, Rugers, Pedersoli Sharps and Rollers, as well as Marlins. Over the years my go-to bullet has evolved to heat treated, checked .360 Ranch Dog 350s or RCBS 300s pushed by 26 grains 2400, which gives a pleasant load with good accuracy in all my guns.
My as cast alloy is about 12-13 BHN which heat treats to the mid 20s without pushing any limits and can runs to a painful 2000 fps with accuracy and never a trace of leading. I've recently started powder coating, but haven't given up old lubing practices quite yet... call it double insurance against leading..
A friend just received a beautiful Shiloh Sharps and from my reloading shelf stock, I'm making up a care package for him:
RCBS 300-FNGC
RCBS 400 - FNGC
NOE 440 FNGC
Ranch Dog 350 FNGC
Lee 300 plain base
Lee 400 plane base
Lee 500 2R GC
RCBS 500(525?) Long range silhouette Plain base.
All will be Powder Coated, lubed, and checked, except plain base designs, of course.
I expect his velocity to be held to 1400-1500 fps.
Should I provide him heat treated or as cast alloy?
At 1500 fps or below I don't know that even the gas checks are required, though in practice I've always used 'em.
What say you guys?
