My first time shooting cast in a rifle and it was a blast!!! I had soooooo much fun! I recently got an Accurate mold for my new 45-70. It was the 460-415V. I really liked the looks of that profile, so I ordered one. I poured a few last week to see how they would perform. These are the details: the load was 1x fired Remington brass trimmed to 2.095. The bullets were poured out of 50/50 COWW/Pure+2% tin and powder coated. I used CCI 200 primers, and loaded the shells up with 36 grains of IMR4198.
Here are the result at 100 yards;
This was the first time this gun was fired. I decided I will shoot only cast out of this one! With these results first round, I am liking it a lot! It was a very pleasant load to shoot! What kind of velocity do you thing this load should yield? I was thinking around 1600. Does this sound right?
And here is a pic of the gun that did this! It a new Marlin 1895 SBL with a Leupold 1-4x20 Shotgun scope. I must say I really like this set-up!!!

The trick to loading a modern .45-70 like that is to "stop when it hurts".

You've got enough diameter, meplat, and weight there for anything that walks the earth if you get the alloy and hardness right for the job. Remember that 405 grains of round nose at 1200 fps is a major reason we don't have bison loitering on every street corner smoking cigarettes. You can improve your trajectory by increasing your speed and maybe hardening up your alloy, but measuring the increase in "degrees of dead" of anything unfortunate enough to be standing in front of one isn't likely to show you much change.

BTW - (and I've said this elsewhere), the effect of NOE's 405 grain with a "little" .34 caliber meplat at about 1600fps on a water-filled milk jug is positively cataclysmic. You owe it to yourself to try this - preferably with the jug on loose surface soil so you can see the force of the displacement!

The gun you have pictured is on my to buy list if I come across it. Is it a JM or REP marked gun? How do you like it? It groups nicely, just like my 1895GS is low power scope on it.

Ain't that the truth!!! When it stops being enjoyable time to drag out the 22's but for some reason it is no where near as much fun.
