    Lead

I scored 2800lbs of lead yesterday. Mostly pure, some WWs and Tin. Had to take it all out of a basement. That was a chore .6 hrs to get everything out. There were ingots piled up all over the basement. Got some powder and primers also. 2 Saeco furnaces and assorted ladels etc. At least 500 pieces of new old stock 38-40 brass. And a bunch of other stuff. Now the real work begins, testing the ingots to verify pure or whatever.

And to think I feel beat up from working under my tractor Sat. afternoon for 5 hrs.! Was it a reasonable price you got this stuff for, or a "just get it out of my house" removal?Robert

I really feel better than I thought I would. Some soreness in the legs and shoulders. I made over 40 trips up and down the stairs. Not bad for a 59yr old guy. Ready to go another 10 rounds with a bucket of ingots. I don't think I will need any more lead for quite awhile. I have well over a ton of pure and over a ton of WW. There is a pile of ingots that are harder than pure, need to test for hardness. There is also a bunch of mini balls and 38-40 cast boolits.
I got primers and powder with hand written dates of 1988. Primers look new and most of the powder is still sealed. What powder that is open still smells normal.

Oh dear, it sounds like some old caster's hoard. Was this an estate sale?

No, not an estate sale. Just an old time caster selling off his stuff. He is disabled and has a hard time getting around.
I tried for a week to get some help. None of the big babies wanted to work. They all want to shoot, but don't want to do any prep work. I think there will be a price for ammo in the future. Enough ranting for one day.

That has been my experience with most things...did some house cleaning a few years ago and kicked my so called friends to the curb. Wish I could do the same for family members who only phone when they need something.

You could speed that up using an Auto Punch and make three groups: Soft, intermediate, and hard. Then you can focus your hardness testing on what actually needs it.

So far the few ingots I tested are all dead soft. I was told that all but 2 buckets are soft. We will see. I hope it is mostly soft. I will not need to get anymore lead for the rest of my life.

Good score. I'm older and would have took it too. Might have taken me a bit longer to get it out though.

Naw that's a start. Buy for the ones coming behind you. Hopefully a good one will show up before your end. Help them...

One can only hope that someone will pick up the reigns. Neither of my kids are into casting. They are into shooting all my ammo though. Oh well.

You have kids, why don't you have an assembly line? Get one on resizing brass, get one on measuring charges, etc.. Turret of kids! Team-building and all that.

2800 pounds of lead.... That's like 130666 150 grain boolits waiting to happen. Happy casting!!!!

Sometimes it takes a second box of boolits to clear my head.
