    The only thing I find powers greater than about 5x useful for, as long as were talking medium size game, is identifying whether the deer has a spike or not to make sure I am shooting legally. It is just easier for me than fumbling for my rifle after lowering my binos. As far as what is comfortable while actually shooting I prefer lower magnification for both softening up the natural wobble and better FOV.

    Either should work fine. I prefer fixed power depending on use. I do agree with some of the comments the 3-9 fill the bill as varible scopes go..

    Brand aside, 3x9 is my "Gold Standard" for scopes. I have a couple 4x12x40's, but the physical size of them hampers rifle handling/carrying. Can still get decent sized/smaller scopes in 3x9, mag range I use most is well within 3x9.
