Load Data for 429421 PB Bullet 44 Magnum

I've been looking for 44 Magnum load data for this mold/bullet. The actual weight is about 254 grains. The gun is a Rossi M92 (1:30 twist, 20").

I seem to have a lot of Trail Boss and 800-X to work with. I tried Unique last weekend (10 to 11 grains in 1/2 grain increments), but didn't find any tight groups with my gun with Unique.

This is a new weekend, so I wanted to try some different powders, maybe adjust what I've done with the Unique (but I have less than a pound of it left, and I can't find anymore).

I do have some H110, Lil'Gun and Titegroup, in addition to the TB and 800-X. Hodgdon's web site lists loads for 240 grain and 270 bullets, but I'm half way between those two. 800-X has done real well in my 45 Colt (250 grain cast), and I was hoping to find a load range for it, but Hodgdon only list a max charge for 800-X in 44 Mag (13.4 grains for a 240 grain LSWC) . I figure the knowledge base here might have some ideas for starting loads. I've been searching all week for data, as I have time. Now it's weekend time!

I'm looking for mid-range loads, nothing high velocity.

I have 44 Special brass too, and I wouldn't mind suggestions there either.

    Thanks in advance guys.

Long barrel need good lube, what lube are you using?
What diameter are you sizing the bullet?
Weight 254 makes the bullet soft, what alloy you using?
Why not use 429244 and a gas check in the rifle?

    Mid-range 8-9 grains of Unique

    Thanks Mike,

.430" dia. The hardness stands at about 10 bhn. It's a mixture of 60/40 COWW/SOWW AC. I wanted a bullet in this hardness range.

I'm not in love with gas checks anymore, and I feel I can develop quality loads without them if I have properly sized bullets, the right hardness and don't push them too hard for a given twist rate.

Oh, and I have plenty of lube, I think. Found splatters on the target 25 yards away last weekend.

OK, so you want a soft bullet, without gas check in a rifle barrel in 44 Mag
8-9 grains of Unique or 20 grains of 4227 will give a more gentle start down
    the rifling.

Can't speak for a Rossi but my Marlin likes my H&G #503 over 22 grs. of IMR4227. I used to shoot the same load (up to 24 grs.) under my old Lyman 429421 but I never could get decent accuracy from that boolit. It cast too small for my fat marlin bore. I need at least 0.432" for my 0.4315" groove diameter. My moulds are now 0.433" to 0.435" and all work well.

I found Unique to be lacking in the longer barrel of the Marlin. For light to moderate loads it might be okay but I think it is a bit fast for upper end loads.

Mike, you hit the nail on the head with that suggestion of 20 grains of 4227. I had H4227 on hand. Here's my group.

I have plenty of Trail Boss, so I figured I would try some loads with it. 7.0 grains was a winner today. The strange thing is, how much higher the rounds landed vs. H4227 and the Unique rounds I tried.

The Unique produced large groups. No go. H4227 and Trail Boss are keepers. Now to repeat and chrono.

    Thanks again!!!

+1 on the 8 - 8.5 gr of Unique under that bullet. Also if you add 2% tin to the COWWs before adding the tin you'll end up with a better bullet for the rifle. I used COWWs + 2% tin mixed 50/50 with lead over 8.5 gr Unique and 23 gr H4227 in my Rossi with 24" barrel. Both loads were also excellent in my 44 Revolvers.
