I have enjoyed this thread, and thank you to all that have served. I unfortunately did not....one of my greatest regrets.

retread - you served with my father. he was on the America during the same time....communications man, I believe.

Couple of years old but great pictures. My daughter got back from Recruiting School last week or the week before. Took her quite awhile but I think she finally got her head right.

I remember many times deployed waking buddies up after a "rough night" saying " wake up honey, time to go to MEPS". A bewildered look and confusion is what I got back.

42 years ago now? So please tell us, in your 20 years of active service how many times you were able to be 'home' for each of these holidays. Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years Eve, your birthday, and the 4 th of July?

This is the very thing that most folks don't ever think about when they hear or know about a military member doing 20 years active duty. Thank you for your service Ron. Been there done that, 70 - 90.

For Christmas and New Years I usually stood the 0000 - 0400 (mid) watch. I was single and I lived aboard, so if it wasn't my duty day I would pick a deserving married guy with kids and trade duty so they could be home that morning. My last year of active duty the recipient was almost in shock when I handed him the paperwork. What a great memory!

BrassMag, you enlisted just 27 days before I retired! So I guess I can call you 'Jeep'...

Enlisted in the USAR about 47 years ago. Stayed for 23+ (almost 24) till they changed the unit from Arty to a gas station. Had the time of my life and would do it all over again. Meet some good people and some not so, was in commo and started out being a low man on the totem pole ended up running the commo for the BN. Only understand about 1/2 the Navy talk but enjoy this thread a lot.

I too enlisted in June 1974 and only in hindsight at age 37 wished I'd stayed in.
