Bolt handle - straight / turn down

For the past year, I've been working on a scout rifle.
    It started life as a 98' Mauser Turk, 8 X 57 mm.

Yesterday, I received the bolt handle from my gunsmith in Colorado. I think the rifle looks and handles much better now.

This is what the rifle looked like 1 year ago.
I hand picked this rifle out of about 35 Turkish 8 X 57 mm rifles in a local gun shop about 10 yrs. ago and paid $60 out the door . It has a pristine bore.

By the way, now that all the work is completed, ( glass bedded, Timmney trigger- - set to 1 lb., scout mount D & T - - installed, and scout scope, turned down bolt handle) I've had some of my " good friends " offer me my $60 investment back. You just can't beat a good friend.

    Yes I did.

I went slow with a Dremel and a carbide cutter.

Didn't get in any hurry. Used a black crayola crayon on the underside of the bolt handle to continually " mark " where wood needed to be removed.

If you've ever done a few, it is a fairly straight forward task. Took me about 45 minutes to do the work.

Did you have to notch out the receiver under the bolt? Sometimes you have to depending on how the bolt was welded back on.

Yes, I did have to remove some metal to provide for 100% lock up of the bolt.

    Great job Ben,
    .
Gives the rifle a custom look!
    .
Did you tig weld or braze a new handle on the original bolt, or did you forge the original handle into the new shape?

I didn't do it, but my gunsmith forged the original handle into the new shape?

    Hi Ben,
Are you using the original front sight with that receiver sight?
    Thanks

    JWFilips :

A year ago before making the decision to turn my rifle into a scout rifle, I used the military front sight . The arrangement zeroed just fine with the rear receiver sight.

A year later, there is no military front sight on my scout , here is my front sight.

An ivory bead from the 1950's. I cut the barrel to 24 " , re-crowned the barrel , and then put the front sight ramp and front sight on.

I can't say that I've still only got $60 in the rifle, .......but I probably have not crossed $250 yet.

Pretty good shooting $250 package in my opinion. Of course, keep in mind that 90% of the labor was free because I was doing it. What is time to a hog ? ?
